[SOLVED] Help With HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP)

Post by tb75252 » Fri Sep 19, 2014 11:44 pm

I am using LMDE 64-bit edition.
I have an HP Officejet Pro 8610 that I would like to use with LMDE. Both the printer and PC are connected via Ethernet cables to a router.

I tried installing the printer using LMDE's Settings -> Printers utility but it freezes at the "Searching for drivers" window.

So I would like to install the latest version of HPLIP but LMDE is not one of the distributions shown in their Installation Wizard. (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/in ... index.html) I tried installing the version for Debian 7.5 (and the one for Linux Mint 17) but got errors!

What do I need to do in order to install my printer? I need at least HPLIP 3.14.4 and I have 3.13.9 installed...

Why not try getting the newer version from Debian Testing repos?

Should I download the .dsc, .tar.gz, or .tar.xz versions?
How do I launch the installer?

When I installed HPLIP, I did it with the Package Manager (Synaptic). If you go to Synaptic and search for HPLIP, you should find it. In my case, most of the components were already installed, so all I had to install was the GUI package. the HPLIP Toolbox then shows up under Menu, Preferences.

That link was intended to show the package information only, it's not for installing anything.
Add Debian Testing repo to your sources list, install/upgrade hplip, remove Debian Testing repo.

I guess I don't know how to do it.
I launched Synaptic Package Manager, went to Settings -> Repositories, selected New and entered the URL, reloaded and got errors. How do I properly add a repository?
