[SOLVED] Firefox causes hard freeze/user reinit

Post by hbco2 »

After recent system upgrades have had serious problems with Firefox. If youtube.com is accessed, the system beeps once, then freezes. Only remedy was to use ALT+PrtScn+B, no other keyboard combination would function. The HD disk was formatted, and a clean LXDE2 Cinnamon has been installed.
The following configurations have been made to the fresh install:
Grub has been reconfigured to add GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x1024
.xconfigure has been added with the following:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024" 108.00 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hs
ync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DVI-0 "1280x1024"
xrandr --addmode DVI-1 "1280x1024"
xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024
xrandr --output DVI-1 --mode 1280x1024
And lastly, the screen background was changed to a solid, custom color.
Firefox was tested by accessing youtube.com and selecting "old mystery movies." With the display set to full-screen, any action to scroll down (keyboard down-arrow, or mouse) will result in a beep. The screen is blanked, and a new user login screen appears.

I am confirming, that after last update I am experiencing Firefox freezing. Actually the whole system freezes and hard reset is needed.

To me it is happening on random pages, not only youtube (while having several tabs open). Had no problem whatsoever until the last apt-get upgrade.

Experienced the same. Unable to reboot via keyboard. Only a hard reboot worked.

Hi, guys.

I am not an LMDE 2 user. So no direct advice from my side.
Noneteless this thread reminds me of similar threads, which have been created in the recent past about Firefox on Linux Mint 17.x.
Perhaps some helpful advice can be found in those threads although they are about the main edition and not about LMDE 2:
(Solved)Firefox Causing Shutdowns?
LM17.3 Cinnamon - Full System crash !!
Independent of the precise Linux Mint edition, my primary suspect would be the graphics driver software in such cases.

Cheers,
Karl

The screen lockup/user reinit doesn't seem to be related to hardware, or firefox for that matter. A beep, followed by user init was triggered by running a long listing in a terminal screen ($locate x). Also, both pae and non-pae linux images have been tested, and firefox was completely deleted from the system and reinstalled without any improvement. When LXDE2 Cinnamon was reinstalled, firefox ran without any problems until the upgrade (apt-get upgrade, apt-get dist-upgrade) was completed. There does seem to be a distinction whether a screen is run as a window or full-screen. Lockup is instant when scrolling down in full screen mode. Lockup can also occur in a windowed screen, but is harder to trigger in that it takes longer or the scrolling function continues to operate for a time.

Seemingly unrelated (but perhaps another issue), another laptop computer running the latest upgrades of LXDE2 Cinnamon has also locked up in the middle of a video, but unlike the major issue, that freeze was relatively rare, and recoverable by shutting down firefox through keyboard commands.

System logs haven't been monitored to see if they could provide any insight.

I just want to add that turning Use Hardware acceleration in Firefox to OFF didn't help. To me, Firefox still crashes - while moving mouse around, nothing intensive. This didn't happen before the last upgrade (it actually never crashed and I had like 30-40 tabs open).

I do, like OP, has an ATI based card. My other computer (old laptop with the intel based card) doesn't crash after the update.

for completness, here is my relevant inxi output:

The single system beep that you hear could be a warning from the motherboard that there is a problem. Have a look in your motherboard handbook and see what a single beep means

If I am correct, Cinnamon is based on Gnome and ATI proprietary drivers (https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary) do not work with gnome based GUI:
https://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/ ... nome-fglrx

So we are "stuck" with free Radeo drivers who are maybe crashing our systems:

Code: Select all

#apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-ati
xserver-xorg-video-ati:
  Installed: 1:7.5.0-1
  Candidate: 1:7.5.0-1
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.5.0-1 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
I don't have beeps, and still crashing occurs.

This might be the relavant log of the crash from the /var/log/messages which freezes the system (Xorg tainted: G):

Code: Select all

Re: Firefox causes hard freeze/user reinit

Post by Packa »

Wondering if anyone has discovered anything useful just yet?

Sadly I've had to abandon Firefox do to it causing extremely frequent freezing of the entire machine and requiring a hard boot. The first time I've had to seriously had to consider other browsers in decades.

Have been forced to move to Midori which run fine. I do miss some of the security/privacy add-ons in Firefox though.

Since there was an indication earlier of video driver issues, FWIW I'm running:

Cedar [Radeon HD 5000/6000/7350/8350 Series]
configuration:
driver: radeon
latency: 0

Like @Packa, I too have switched to alternative browser (vivaldi) as Firefox is not usable at all, crashing the entire machine.

Unfortunately, I don't have any insight on how to solve this.

I also observed that in some cases, Thunderbird (with Lighthouse) will also crash the machine, requiring a hard reset.

linux image upgrade (e.g. 3.16.0-4-686-pae i686) has resolved this issue. Thank you Linux Mint crew!

OK, Googled and found how by using Update Manager, which shows my Mint 17.3 is using Kernel 3.19.0-32, but I'm also experiencing frequent Firefox freezes

Any other options to fix this?
