creating your own disc

Post by Richard01 »

is there anything in the deb repository to make your own disc with the bases kernel installed
(thinking of a live disc with just a few things like a browse,r network, configure, open office write and calculator and email package all installed
a gift for someone who doesnt use the comp much
)

There is nothing ib the default repos that I now of that will do what you want, but you can install Remastersys (if you are using the ext3 file system) or Clonezilla, either of these will ceate an ISO file that can be put on a DVD or flash drive and booted exactly like the original live CD/DVD or flash drive used to install Mint.

Clonezilla website

EDIT:

I just checked the site given in the topic I referenced above for Remastersys and found that the entire website (http://geekconnection.org/home/ )has been destroyed by a malicious attack along with all repos they hosted. However, you can still get Remastersys from the home page here via a redirect installed at the former geekconnection.com site.

hmmm that might be a problem Aging Technogeek cause by default the extension keeps switching to ext4 by default
( I tried it with gparted when installing and the ext keeps switching back to ext4 )
but i do know the deb install do still use a ext3 but not for mint im afraid

Remastersys will not work in ext4 (or so I am told. I have not tried it myself yet), but Clonezilla works fine in ext4. I'm sorry I didn't make that clear in my original post.

I just tried Remastersys on my Mint 10 RC1 installation (on ext4) and it worked well. The only trouble I had was my /home was not large enough to hold the files created.

Remastersys for Ubuntu and Remastersys for Debian are two separate apps. The Ubuntu version works with Ext4, the Debian version does not.

That's good to know. I had not heard of that distinction previously.

That attack happened some months back. The site was only down for a few days.

Everything is back to normal now.

The correct URL is http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/

If you use the 'dist' option in Remastersys it excludes /home, so the size limit is easier & privacy is maintained.
