Hi everyone, I am fairly new to using linux, I manage to got my thinkpad t410 o run on mint debian and got my virtual machine set up. I am having a bit problem trying to install the driver (cant seems to disable the X-server). Does anyone know of an idiot proof guide that can I can follow to install the videa driver? Also, does installing the driver mess up the current screen resolution?

update:

with mint debian 2010
all i did was:
download nvidea driver
press crl+alt+f1
enter: /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop
cd to the directory and sudo sh driver_name.sh
it will claim noaveau driver still run, do you want to patch to stop it: agree to it
restart, boot to safe mode, sh to directory, and install
note: when it princess about gcc version not the same: click no, then yes, yes. ...
reboot and go in regular mode

wow that sounds easier than what i been doing.....

i been deleting uninstalling nouveau/nvidia
install the dkms for nvidia through synaptic
uninstall gdm3 and xorg
reboot
sign-in at the command prompt
su to root
cd into the directory with my driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260-19.21.run
chmod a+x the driver name
./thedrivername
i get the gcc warning and hit no
follow the other prompts to install it all. it does an nvidia-xconfig for you

when it's done i install xorg
then install gdm3
i do these with separate command but prolly don't need to
reboot
sign in
i add the nvidia-settings menu item to the taskbar
edit it from the taskbar to add gksudo to the front of it
enable my 32inch tv as an extra monitor, adjust its resolution
then save it
reboot
all is well

guess that's a lengthy solution compared to what you guys do buy i can't get it to install with x running and the script to disable nouveau never works for me

it tires me out just thinking about doing all that. i'll give your solution a try. :)
