[SOLVED] How do I exit the X server in LMDE?

Yesterday I finally updated my LMDE (there were 374 updates available). Last time I tried this, I had to revert to a previously made backup image, since my system got completely screwed up after installing the updates. This time however, things ran more smoothly. At first the update process got interrupted a few times by an error which said that the file /etc/init.d/checkfs.sh was not readable. When I checked this folder, there was no such file to be found, but I did see a file called checkfsbackup.sh. So I renamed that back to checkfs.sh and then started the update process again. I don't know if renaming that backup file was the right thing to do, but at least Mint stopped complaining and eventually finished the update process (I got one more problem with mintdesktop, but that got solved thanks to a post in this forum).

So my system is finally up to date again - except that I need to reinstall my nvidia drivers now because compiz, emerald and most of my available screen resolutions have disappeared. I downloaded the correct drivers from the nvidia site, but in order to install them, I first have to exit the X server. I looked on the net and tried just about everything I found to do this: hitting CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE, typing init3, init 3, gdm stop, gdm3 stop and a few other commands. Nothing worked however, and I gave up eventually and decided to just ask the question here. :)

Can someone please tell me what is the correct way to exit the X server in LMDE and get a root terminal so I can finally install the drivers?

Thank you.

I think you are looking for ctrl+alt+F1. Also if you can I recommend you download sgfxi from http://smxi.org. You run this out of X also and it takes care of the Nvidia driver very well. You can also use smxi to do your updates but i use it just for the sgfxi which fixes my video at these random times in less than 5 minutes.

Sgfxi worked wonderfully! All my graphics problems got fixed in less than 5 minutes, just like you said.

Thank you very much for the tip!
