One of these packages could be the culprit: libmono-cairo4.0-cil, libmono-system-drawing4.0-cil,
libmozjs185-1.0, libglade2.0-cil.

Haven't posted here in a while. After a bit of clean up on my system, and a bunch of upgrades, I'm down to only 4 broken packages right now, all gconf2 packages being held back by apt-listbugs:
gconf-defaults-service
gconf2
gconf2-common
libgconf2-4
(sudo was reported as broken on NON-linux architectures, but as I'm running linux I upgraded it without incident)

The simple/recommended/easy way .. start over and install 64 bit from scratch.
It is POSSIBLE to upgrade Debian form 32 to 64 bit, though the process is rather painstaking as described here:

in addition to gconf, samba packages now want to break each other. This happens quite often with samba/winbind and I assume it will be sorted out in a matter of days.

Probably too late now, but the future is multi-arch. To achieve that you would download a debian multi-arch minimal install and select AMD64 as the installation. Then you have a very flexible system that can run anything and all the 32bit and 64bit packages available to install. Of course you would mainly use 64bit anyway and you can only have one or the other (not two versions of same package). The trick is to then Mintify the Debian.

Agreed, I just this past week built a new Debian OS from a net.install on my new Thinkpad laptop.
I went with the "multi-arch' set-up. (Multiple Architectures - not confined to either 32 or 64 bit)
I also, upgraded the Debian 'stable+backports' install, to using the 3.1.0-bpo "pae" kernel, to get full support for the exteneded RAM.

I might have been a bit hasty in jumping into multi-arch. It is not fully formed yet in Debian and it is not straight forward. Definitely OK for the curious pioneers if they want, mine is fully functional as an AMD64 system but not too sure it is properly configured as multi-arch. Ubuntu seems setup already if you install 64bit. More research required.
EDIT: My system got hosed by a conflict between my Samsung Laser drivers and system updates. I now know how to fix it without trashing everything, but alas too late for the initial trashing. I installed from a debian multiarch netinst and it all went well, but somehow I managed to convert it to a conventional AMD64 with ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk. Never mind as it works fine, it is just not what I intended. I then added all the Mint bits to create a hybrid Mint/Sid system that this forum is all about.
Any Debian super stars out there who know about multiarch feel free to comment. I guess the other issue is the Mint LMDE repos are not multiarch yet.

Don't upgrade the package libaudit0 to version 2.1.3-1: the system don't start after reboot...the server X don't start!!!!

I'm so glad I follow this thread. It wasn't in my update batch this am and I suspected it was being held back, but nope. It's among the 4 packages waiting to be upgraded. I guess I won't do any upgrading until I see the all clear. Thanks for the alert, Regulus.

I updated this morning (i386) and installed kernel 3.2. The X-server didn't start with the new kernel but it was no problem with
kernel 3.0. Mono is still broken, although Debian weather shows sunshine

My recommendation, for what it is worth, is NOT to do this. But for those that like to tinker ......
Mini HowNotTo: Multiarch Debian Testing
Download the multi-arch netinst CD image, burn and boot.
From the menu select the very first entry "Install", ignore all the other options.
As it installs it will reach a point where it asks which kernel you want. Select AMD64, the generic entry not the specific version, something like kernel-image-AMD64.
Let it finish and there you have it, a system that can install and run any AMD64 or ia32 program. Installing a 32bit kernel is pointless as it will not be able to execute 64bit. And as of this week it is fully Gnome 3.2 in testing.
The next step is Minting the Debian. I will test adding Mint repos and see what happens.
EDIT:1 Adding Linuxmint and Debian-Multimedia results in both those repos defaulting to i386. Now I need to work out how to force them to 64bit (neither is apparently multi-arch yet). The main Debian repos are happily multi-arch.
EDIT:2 In my humble opinion it is too early to use multi-arch on a Linuxmint Debian system. There are too many hurdles to cross. Dpkg is needed from experimental just to support multi-arch. My virtual machine install is functional, but not really optimal. In the end it is a i386 system with an amd64 kernel. I will continue to play with the setup, but I would not use it for every day use for a while yet.

"Fixed" the bug of libaudit0: removed version 2.1.3-1 and replaced with version 1.7.18-1.1
