Google Earth and Stellarium not working after april 12 upd.

Hi,

I just discovered that Google Earth does not start after the april 12 update. It crashes with this error:

Has anyone else had the same problem?

Since I can't make the ATI driver work with the new kernel, I don't know if it is the kernel itself that bothers Google Earth or if it is because it needs the ATI driver.

EDIT: It also applies to Stellarium. That fails with a segmentation fault.

I run it with an Nvidia driver no problems. My Google Earth has the same build date as your so I think we have the same version. I don't think it is the kernel. As to getting your card to work have you tried sgfxi from smxi.org? http://smxi.org/docs/sgfxi-manual.htm

That usually is caused by missing/broken dependencies. Since Mint has made a good googleearth package that installs all the needed dependencies, you may want to try reinstalling it with Synaptic Package Manager. It's shown as googleearth, not googleearth-package. Also make sure you have GLX running. Type "inxi -xG" in Terminal (without the quotes). It should show Direct Rendering: Yes.

Interesting point you make with the direct rendering but mine is No. Which confuses me...



EDIT: I ran sgfxi and it fixed that but removes the Nvidia settings GUI...

sgfxi doesn't remove the gui, just the link I think vanishes for some users in some cases.

Here's a useful command to learn if you're going to run unix like systems:

which nvidia-settings
/usr/bin/nvidia-settings

there it is, just create a link to it, or a menu item, and away you go.

Try it, it's easy, which plus any appname.

type -p nvidia-settings
also works, but which is easier to remember.

Start it as root if you want your changes to be permanent, but in general, why do you need to even see that after the first install? It's not like nvidia offers a lot of options for their Linux drivers.
