Greetings to all... Wifi/Restricted etc...?

Post by jcannonb »

Greetings...

I am a long time Unix lover. Have had a Mac for ages. Unfortunately, with Lion, I don't like so much what they are trying to do with OS X now. Having been a long lover of Ubuntu Mint, I wanted to try LMDE. I appreciate the low level nature of LMDE with the polish added to Debian directly.

My question centers around restructed drivers. Linux Mint (Ubuntu) has a restricted driver repo that sees my video and wireless card on my MacBook pro 5,5. LMDE has not been so kind to me. Is there a restricted driver repo I can add, or am I going to have to ferret out for these things manually?

Much appreciated. Love the work. This is a project I am proud to support.

Regards,
J

There is a lot of information on the Debian wiki: http://wiki.debian.org/MacBook. It has a section on wireless and video. It also has tips on installation, partitioning, and booting. I think most of this will be usable for LMDE also.

There are proprietary drivers in repos, yes. The bad news is that a very convenient jockey-gtk utility hasn't been ported yet. (But maybe it will be someday.) It's basically 1-click install tool for the proprietary video drivers. These drivers can be installed by other means though.
About video drivers: do you have nvidia, ati, intel or some other video card?

I've actually decided to get a lenovo ideapad I think... I will keep OS X on this machine and just transition over.
