Updates Issues

Still facing the same issue with updates. everytime i try update gives fix broken package. Fix Broken package from pacakge manager does nothing. Before i used to get the list of updates when i connect to internet. Was able to see the list of updates when the updates info balloon is clicked. Now get a red X mark on the balloon and some error with packages msg comes. Also firefox is screwed up afterupdating it installing the new ver. wat can be don now.

From terminal can you please execute this command and post the output here..

wow, we have here a though situation; i don't want to put your hopes down, but i don't believe (in my experience) that this update is going to work;
first, let's see a couple things:
- how long have you installed this system?
- when was the last time you update it, if ever?
- how customised/tweaked is the install? how hard would it be for you to start with a fresh install?
i'm asking this because for the amount of upgradable pkgs you have, my guess is that this is a iso from dec/jan and was never updated; as you can see in the output, you have around 1000 pkgs to update (this is more or less all the OS) and some of those updates are major v. bumps (specially all the ones related with basics of the system)
so, this major update will break, several times, a couple of them badly, depends of your expertise if you can or not workaround those breakages, and even so, in the end i can't assure you that you end up with a functional system
but all this to say that if you can (if you don't mind) start fresh, pick one of the new respins

well damn i had installed the OS just after the h/w issue came prob three weeks back.. Updates never happened anytime i installed. Thanks for the info zerozero. Will download the latest ver and install it. Just wanna know which one to download LMDE or Linux 11.

that's a personal choice that only you can make:
you have plus and minus on each option;
LMDE has a higher learning curve, may be harder to setup, but once you do it, you probably don't have to do it again;
the main ed. is easier to start with, but you have to reinstall every 6 or so months if you want to be updated;
those are just a few topics about both ed., think about it

Well zerozero i did take ur suggestion and tried reinstalling the latest LMDE Gnome(201109). The setup starts and then hangs at
Waiting for /dev to be fully populated...
doesnt go beyond this. Have checked the md5 hash and is correct. The same iso am able to install it in virtual box. works fine there. thought it might be some issue with prev installation so wiped the hdd and then tried same issue. wat needs to be done now.

What were your selection for different partitions like /root, /home etc. Little detail like size of partition, type etc.

well i completely deleted everything from the prev installation. I formatted the HDD completely and made it RAW. the prev installation was on 160gb HDD and i had made the installation on 140gb primary and 18gb as swap. The new ISO which i downloaded is not going to the setup window only. stops at Waiting for /dev to be populated... doesnt go beyond this point. have kept the system for 3-4 hrs in the same mode but no progress.

That is what I was trying to find out..what not try this method..
1. Boot with live DVD..make sure you are able to connect to Internet.
2. Using Gparted in Live DVD create 3 primary partitions of type EXT4.. 30 GB, 4 GB, and 105 GB. Flag 20 GB as Bootable.. (GB figures are just for example)
3. Now go ahead and install..use 30 GB for /root, 4 GB for swap, 105 GB for /home
Hope this will work..
