Sorry Gene,

If you're in the gnome side of your system, enable the experimental repos, then refresh, then in terminal do a: sudo apt-get install kde-full......it should then install kde 4.7.4 and all will be good....I'm back in the kde side with 4.7.4, and it's quite nice...let me know...cheers

Damn. I think I'm glad I didn't take the upgrades yet. I see just doing sudo apt-get upgrade instead of sudo apt-get dist-upgrade has a different group of files available, supposedly without the removals. Here's the list from plain upgrade:

Upon reboot things are back to normal, but seems not stable.

I am using experimental now. A plain upgrade shows the list without removals, the removals come with my usual dist-upgrade. I'm hesitant to do any upgrading today with what I'm seeing in this thread. not even cherry-picking the 4.7.2 KDE packages since I already have most if not all of them from qt-kde.

I would not do a full update/dis-Upgrade from experimental. Seems like lots of problems.
I followed "zerozero's" method, and only did a full DU from SID, and then from experimental JUST upgraded selected KDE 4.7.2 packages. (there are lots). Even with that its buggy. I rebooted again, and this time backgrounds are normal.

Dont have time to play with this today.
Perhaps tomorrow.

- uncommented the experimental repos in my sources.list (they were already there, just in case...)

I removed the rules file from KDE and refreshed my package list, and looking in the Update Manager at just packages labeled version 4.7.4 I see ark in the list. Should I take it even though it's not a KDE app, and am I looking at the right list to just take the 4.7.4 packages?

There are two 'safe' ways to upgrade to kde 4.7.4.

1) Use Synaptic and manually mark all of the kde4.7.4 packages for upgrade.
2) Follow the instructions at The Debian KDE maintainers website - http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde47.html

No issues with kde 4.7.4 here.

I tried that first, craig, and the dist-upgrade wanted to wipe out too many packages I depend on on a daily basis, as I said earlier today. Plus I'm seeing people did that and ended up with some stability issues. I suspect it's partly due to bolting KDE SC 3.7.2+ on top of LMDE rather than starting with a KDE distro.

don't know what to tell you, i'm sorry to see that you are having this hard time to get 4.7.4 (i got it so smoothly);
- i wouldn't (i didn't) add that rule file to etc/apt/preferences or preferences.d (since LMDE already has a preferences file, conflicts will appear)
- i find strange that Gene only finds 4.7.2 even after adding experimental;
- it's never, never a good idea to D-U with experimental open (my very humble opinion- one should cherry-pick what one needs and turn the tap off again)

what i did is described above:
- have a full and "stable" updated sid system;
- add the relevant experimental repos (i think multimedia is also needed- didn't tried without, so can't tell if it would work)
- refresh synaptic and in the upgradable pkgs filter the kde ones and mark them to install;

I ditched that install and reverted to a day old clone of LMDE-XFCE. The problem you saw in the screenie I posted was not just in KDE (after the upgrade to KDE in XFCE) but also showed up in XFCE as well. Sometimes I would log in-log out, and it would load ok, sometimes not. I must have missed a package or more likely added one I was not supposed to..

No problem.. Actually getting to like XFCE... Would like to get Mint Menu back though, in XFCE. I lost it on upgrade to Testing. Personally going to wait till KDE 4.6.2(4?) get into SID before I try it again.

And now it seems I have another issue. When I got KDE SC 4.7.2 installed and stable I killed enough of the GNOME side of my system that I can't log into GNOME anymore. Damn. I think I'm glad I didn't take the upgrades yet. I see just doing sudo apt-get upgrade instead of sudo apt-get dist-upgrade has a different group of files available, supposedly without the removals.

My understanding of dependency resolution is that, to upgrade a package to a new version:

• apt-get upgrade will neither remove nor install new packages
• aptitude safe-upgrade will install new packages, but not remove any
• apt-get dist-upgrade, aptitude full-upgrade will proceed By Any Means Necessary, to include wiping out your system

I'm noticing there's no removal. Has anyone done a straight upgrade and not had their video borked? (Not sure from what I'm reading so I'm simply asking in case I assume incorrectly.) I took the kde-standard meta so I'd rather not go kde-full if I can avoid it.

Yes, sorry if I wasn't clear. My (upgraded, not dist-upgraded) 4.7.4 desktop seems happy, with apt, compiz, python, xorg held back -- whatever's causing dist-upgrade to want to remove all that, I'll wait.

One tweak that might be important: my /etc/apt/preferences pin-priority for "o=Debian" is 700, instead of the default 500. (history)
