Problems with HP external hard drive

I have an HP external hard drive and every time I try to disconnect it my system crashes. I have a Gateway FX, Model number MS2252 running LMDE. I had to disable the security features on the hard drive with my Windows desktop to get it to work and I think the problem is that it is read like two attached items but when you eject one they both have to eject. If I'm not posting enough information please let me know and I will get whatever information I can. Thank you for all help!
