[Open again] Update broke X -> no drivers available

Post by Silberwoelfin » Mon Apr 02, 2012 1:53 pm

Hi there,

today I decided to update my LMDE system to Update Pack 4, including the new kernel 3.2. Unfortunately it seems this completely broke my x-server since it now refuses to recognize any graphics drivers installed.
I've got a Nvidia 9800GT installed and so far used the proprietary driver downloaded from nvidia's website. But neither reinstalling that one, nor installing it the 'debian-way' (using nvidia-kernel-dkms) nor using nouveau works. And neither does using an older kernel. :(

Output from X is:

Code: Select all

[...]
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
(Or "failed to load module "nouveau", if using that one)

I already found this
Update 12 march 2012- nvidia and VB fail against the new 3.2.0-2 kernel; reinstall the correspondent dkms modules viewtopic.php?f=198&t=67502&p=553788#p553773
in the BREAKAGES thread, but the solution (reinstalling dkms) obviously didn't work for me.

So now I always get the command login whether I boot kernel 3.0 or 3.2.

Can anybody help me?

Same thing happened to me. I have bad news, and good news.

Bad news is, when in tty after UP4, I don't know of any way to fix it.

I hope you made a snapshot of your VM pre-UP4. If so, please restore it. If you have, here's the good news:

Update you VirtualBox version to 4.1.10 and install the latest Guest Additions before applying UP4. They contain updated X.org modules.

Apply UP4. Right after it, before rebooting, re-install the Guest Additions from 4.1.10, and when that's done, reboot from terminal by typing the following:

shutdown -r now

X should boot now. That's how I did it, best of luck! :D

Thanks for your reply, but I do not use a VM.

Have you tried this?

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-kernel-dkms
and reboot

Yeah, I tried that, like a dozen times. Didn't work. With neither kernel.

I now resorted to doing a fresh install.

because the driver was not installed (properly) with dkms and furthermore you were jumping between methods (direct d/l, dkms); now in that system (if we still go in time) the only chance is http://code.google.com/p/sgfxi/ (cleans the system, installs the driver, does it all for you << except coffee  )

either way, removing the xorg.conf should boot you with nouveau (if it's still installed); just google how to do it (i don't like to pass rm commands in the forum)

Out of curiosity I've just updated sgfxi (the latest version is 4.17.85) - and it still shows the same info for nvidia drivers as before:

Code: Select all

sgfxi -L n

Code: Select all

...
Kernel 3.0: Working: 285/280.xx/173 current-5000 series/96xx-gf2/4 (?). Unknown: 71xx
...
Xorg 1.11 - Buggy, partially working: 285.03/280.13, or newer.
...

Code: Select all

sgfxi -L d

Code: Select all

...
NVidia Default Stable Drivers:
DEFAULT: 295.33 :: LEGACY 3: 173.14.31 :: LEGACY 2: 96.43.20 :: LEGACY 1: 71.86.15
No, I haven't updated my system yet (I'm staying on UP3 until UP4 hits the Latest). I'm just looking into the future :) and I'm puzzled by that sgfxi output. Is there a working combination of kernel, Xorg and nvidia drivers in UP4?
I mean, there's a new kernel and a new Xorg 1.11 there, right? And that usually sounds like trouble.
Or is it just sgfxi showing me outdated info? :)

Okay, so now I did a fresh install and installing mythtv unfortunately reinstalled the nvidia-driver. Which lead me back to where I started, with no X.
Therefore I now downloaded sgfxi und ran it. It did its thing, downloading and installing nvidia, blacklisting nouveau, but outputted an error saying, it could not remove nouveau. Afterwards I shutdown an waited the recommended 30 seconds before booting again.

Now I'm stuck again at a command login. It seems, sgfxi did not work. When I tried to run it again, it said, I had an X running and should stop that before continuing. Also it says "Checking for installed nVidia driver... No sgfxi nVidia Driver Detected", indicating, the previous installation attempt failed.
"ps aux | grep Xorg" now lists several(!) Xorg and gdm running on various ttys, that I didn't even know existed (up til tty62, I think).

I have no idea what to do now.

I installed a whole lot of programs via aptitude, so I didn't exactly pay attention to which dependencies it installed along, I only noticed it when nvidia-kernel-dkms was build and mythtv was the only grpahic-related program I could think of that could have been responsible. Maybe it wasn't.
