Virtualboxinstallation on Mint fails

Post by christian99x »

Hi,

I'm trying to install Virtualbox for a while and no matter which version I use, it always fails.

Here's the /var/log/vbox-install.log:

Code: Select all

My gcc version: gcc (Ubuntu 4.8.4-2ubuntu1~14.04.3) 4.8.4

I already found out that the gcc version does not support the -fstack-protector-strong . I can find gcc-4.9 in my repositories, but I can not install it without removing a couple of other packages (inkl. gcc-4.8, nvidia-prime, ...) and I am concerned that if I do so, other things do not work anymore. Additionally I am unsure if this solves the problem and I don't want to mess up my whole system. Can somebody give me some advice how I should continue?

Thanks!

What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment? If you don't know open a terminal and enter:

Code: Select all

inxi -Sz
Paste the output here.

Which versions of VB did you try? From which sources?

With all sources the same error message? I hardly can believe this.

From the official repositories your only choice is 5.0.24. As this does not have the latest bug fixes I recommend to download 5.0.28 from here. You need to pick the 64 bit version for Ubuntu 16.04.

Remove at first whatever you have installed now.

I wonder what you really did at first. My guess: You downloaded the wrong version.
