VMWare Workstation 12.5.5 requires gcc-6

Post by Extarys »

Hi!

So I wanted to install VMware cause I think I might get better performance compared to VirtualBox.

I downloaded the .bundle, installed it but when I launch, it says the gcc-6 6.2 or later is required.

Code: Select all

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-toolchain-r/test/ubuntu xenial main
sudo apt update
sudo apt install gcc-6
Running gcc-6 -v gives me 6.2, but VMWare is still complaining.

Does anyone have installed this version or what recent version is known to work on LM18.1?

Thank you!

you probably need to use VMware Player rather than VMware Workstation,
but that will require searching for that older version of their product.

you could have troubles in getting a Linux version, though.

Hi,
In case helpful, just tried VMware Workstation Player 12.5.5 for you, using Mint 18.1 Cinnamon (kernel 4.10.0-14), it installs and starts without requiring other files.

@Pierre, Newer versions of Player are called Workstation Player, so saying, not sure if OP tried Workstation, or Workstation Player. :)

another option is to use the new Parallels Desktop Lite:
https://www.howtogeek.com/304866/how-to ... ign=buffer
the Catch is that the Free & Lite Version - won't run a Windows VM .. ..
- you have to pay for that option.
but, if you only wish to run some Linux O/Ss - - then it's Free.
