VMware Converter cannot connect to Linux Mint v18.2

Post by PHINZUP »

I am very experienced with Windows, but basically a Linux newbie (some experience with Ubuntu, but brand new to Mint - but what I see so far I really like).
I am using 2 hosts on wired LAN: 1) Win7 with VMware Converter Standalone v6.1.1 & 2) Mint 18.2 (newly installed and fully updated). I want to convert host2 to a VMware virtual machine to run on host2 using VMware Player under Windows 10.
The converter will connect via 'Powered On > Remote Linux machine' to the IP for host2 using the credentials from the installation and receive a Thumbprint Warning - but then I receive an error. The error is: "Authentication Error. Incorrect user name, password or private client key. This operation also requires that the source machine's SSH daemon configuration allows remote root login."
The only clue I could find is VWware KB 1008164 (https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/micro ... 0562820860)
but it is somewhat dated and rather vague.

Any assistance/direction would be greatly appreciated.

Resolved it myself with (https://askubuntu.com/questions/44418/h ... root-login) only to learn that VMware Converter Standalone will only allow an Infrastructure (ESXi) destination. Aaarrrggg!!!
