[Solved] Mint 18.3 Kde freezes on starting virtual machine

Post by Mithrandir »

Hi, I'm using the 4.13.0-26 kernel with 64bit after last update.
VIrtualbox program start without errors, but if I start any virtual machine the system freezes immediatly and I can't read the logs because the freeze.
If I start my system with the 4.10 kernel virtualbox works fine. Kernel's headers are installed.
What can I do? Can I only delete the new kernel or can I solve in other way?
Thanks for help

The crucial question is: Which version of VB do you use? I guess you have 5.0.4 from the repositories. If so remove it (the VMs get preserved) and download the latest version of 5.1 (preferably for stability) or 5.2. 5.0.4 is since long outdated.

Yep, I use the 5.0.40_Ubuntu r115130 version from repository...
So could I remove this version of virtualbox and install a new version without problems with the VMs?
Thank for your attention

Yes, you have to remove this version at first and you can do this without affecting the existing VMs. Do a reboot after removing the old VB nd before you install the new version.

Same problem on Mint 18.3 MATE.

VirtualBox 5.2.4 works.

Thanks, Cosmo.

Im also having a problem with virtual box locking up my machine. I uninstalled it and downloaded the newest version here. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
Im not sure why but when i open the downloaded file the "install package" button is greyed out and I cant install it. Im not sure what else to do.

If you are using Linux Mint 18.3 64bit you should download this package: https://download.virtualbox.org/virtual ... _amd64.deb
What package have you downloaded? What program are you using to install the packages and is there some message in its window beyond the fact that the install button is not active?
Have you removed the previous version of virtualbox and have you rebooted the system before trying the new installation?

You have either downloaded the wrong version or the wrong architecture (32 - 64 bit).

Thank you. I downloaded form the link you provided and it installed easily.
Ill see if it still locks up my machine after work.

Thanks again.

How come the repositories aren't updated to a version which works since this isn't since the MeltDown & Spectre updates?

Just wanted to say thanks to Mithrandir - this solved my problem on a fresh install of 18.3 - and that downloading the LATEST package from Virtualbox.org (virtualbox-5.2_5.2.8-121009~Ubuntu~bionic_amd64.deb) failed horribly!

I find it frustrating that using the normal software manager and/or upgrading the OS to 18 leads to major failures like this with very little explanation.

Linux Mint is a great gnu/linux system. It has his limits, but I believe that it's one of the most stable distributions, at least for the newest laptops and ultrabooks and for linux newbies. Nevertheless sometimes we find some problem, as in any operational system, but people in this forum can fix almost all difficulties.
I'm happy that my solution helped you too. Thanks also to cosmo, that indicated the path =)
