DD encryption use lot of memory

Bonjour,

I use VirtualBox to assess different Linux. The last is Linux Mint Mate. I prefer this OS than Linux Mint 18.1 because I did not see any issue with 3D. However, I am surprised that the Linux Mint Mate needs lot of memory probably due to the DD encryption I try.
From you, do you think that it is normal that the DD encryption use lot of memory?

Regards,

Le Loup

An encrypted volume image has to be stored full-size, yes. When it's locked there's no way of determining which sectors are data and which are unused space.

Thank you Mute Ant.

I found this command:

leloup@leloup-VirtualBox ~ $ df -h
Sys. de fichiers Taille Utilisé Dispo Uti% Monté sur
File Sys. Size Used Avail. Used Monted on
udev 2,0G 0 2,0G 0% /dev
tmpfs 396M 6,1M 390M 2% /run
/dev/mapper/mint--vg-root 26G 7,0G 18G 29% /
tmpfs 2,0G 20M 2,0G 1% /dev/shm
tmpfs 5,0M 4,0K 5,0M 1% /run/lock
tmpfs 2,0G 0 2,0G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/sda1 472M 68M 380M 16% /boot
cgmfs 100K 0 100K 0% /run/cgmanager/fs
tmpfs 396M 40K 396M 1% /run/user/1000
/home/leloup/.Private 26G 7,0G 18G 29% /home/leloup

So I conclude I have no more than 8Go used memory while VirtualBox delivers real size : 29.17Gio and virtual size 30.36Gio.
