Choppy fullscreen video with LM19 and KVM
I have 2 VM's. First is running 18.3 Cinnamon and second running 19 Cinnamon. I pass a video card (ATI Radeon HD 5450 1gb), and some other components (USB3 controller, audio, USB3.1). On the 18.3 install, full screen video (Youtube, vlc, emby, etc.) work great. On the 19 install, full screen video is choppy and unwatchable. In 19, I don't see the software render message come up, so i don't think it's that.
I have 3 similar graphic cards and all 3 work great in 18.3 and are choppy in 19. ATI Radeon HD 5450, 5850 and 6870. All 3 have the same issue. I tried putting the 5850 into a physical machine and booted up LM 19 and it works fine in full screen, this only seems to happen in a VM.
Any idea what could be causing this? I run KVM through Unraid 6.5.3, Libvert is version 4.0.0, QEMU version is 2.11.1. Not sure what other information would be helpful. in LM 18.3, I was running on kernel 4.13.0-45, but i tried 4.15.0-24 and it works fine. LM 19 I have running off 4.15-0-24. I've tried the older 4.15-0 kernel's in the repository, they didn't help.

Re: Choppy fullscreen video with LM19 and KVM
No solution, I just posted a similar question:
viewtopic.php?f=47&t=273622
However, I now have the problem on 18.3 - only for the last few days, so maybe it was an update that already came with 19 but has now made it into an update for 18.3?

Can you try this with VirtualBox or VMWare Player? I'm curious if this is a Mint issue or a VM issue, or some combination of both. If it's video-card related, VMWare's got better virtual hardware support.Essjayess wrote: ⤴Thu Jul 05, 2018 1:35 pm I have 2 VM's. First is running 18.3 Cinnamon and second running 19 Cinnamon. Re: Choppy fullscreen video with LM19 and KVM
EDIT: I thought the reply was for me. Sorry. Anyway, if it's the same issue, which it sounds like, my reply still is somewhat relevant. Can you try this with VirtualBox or VMWare Player?
I don't have VirtualBox, and I would expect VMware Player to have the same software base as VMware Workstation, which is what I'm using (version 14, latest).
Since my virtual machine - that means VMware Workstation - did not change at all (they don't have frequent updates so I remember the last one was quite some time ago) and the issue has only occurred within the last few days, fullscreen video definitely worked before that, I conclude it must be an update that happened inside the VM, probably Mint, since it has affected more than just Firefox although that app has been hit the hardest.
Re: Choppy fullscreen video with LM19 and KVM
I'm going to install a Mint Cinnamon VM and see if I can duplicate this.
Re: Choppy fullscreen video with LM19 and KVM
I updated my other post. I may have located the update that started it for me - it was the recent Firefox and Adobe Flash plugin update. How do I go back to the previous Firefox and Flash package to see if that changes anything?ajgringo619 wrote: ⤴Wed Jul 18, 2018 3:47 pm I'm going to install a Mint Cinnamon VM and see if I can duplicate this.
UPDATE: It's not Adobe Flash but Firefox's builtin HTML5 video decoder. And it's only Firefox, the same video is fine in Chrome.
Re: Choppy fullscreen video with LM19 and KVM
That's why I've never seen this - I don't use Firefox! I'm almost done with my VM; I'll make sure to only test FF.Noseshine wrote: ⤴Wed Jul 18, 2018 4:00 pmI updated my other post. Re: Choppy fullscreen video with LM19 and KVM
OK, install Mint 19 Cinnamon in a VirtualBox VM. Tested Firefox on fox.com - no problems whatsoever.
Here are the software versions I used (updated right after installation was complete):

Question: what OS is your host? Besides this (see my signature for details), the only potential differences I see are the kernel version and the video drivers. I'm running a GeForce 960 with the Nvidia 396.24.10 drivers.Noseshine wrote: ⤴Wed Jul 18, 2018 4:56 pm I have

OK. Later this evening I'll test a VM in Windows 10 (my "other" OS).Noseshine wrote: ⤴Wed Jul 18, 2018 5:03 pmWindows 10. Re: Choppy fullscreen video with LM19 and KVM
UPDATE:
I just updated the Radeon drivers to the latest version, from 18.4.1 to 18.7.1 and rebooted. The exact same video in Firefox now works flawlessly.,
