Virtualbox 5.2.22 Guest Additions + Cinnamon + Software Rendering

Hi,

Just a heads up for anyone running into problems with Virtualbox 5.2.22 direct from Oracle repos and being unable to get rid of Software Rendering in Mint 19 or 19.1 Beta Cinnamon edition guests even with Guest Additions installed and up to date.

The 5.2.22 Guest Additions are buggy and disable 3D acceleration across the board.

Solution 1 - downgrade to Virtualbox 5.2.20 - get the deb here - https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_5_2

Use apt deb or sudo dpkg -i to install in the terminal as Gdebi doesn't allow downgrades of installed applications. You'll need to reboot after downgrading. Install the 5.2.20 Guest Additions in the guest via Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD image.

Solution 2 - Use a test build of the Guest Additions pending release of Virtualbox 5.2.24 - get the 5.2.23 Guest Additions iso here https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds

In your guest operating system use the Devices menu > Optical Drives > Choose Disc Image to mount the alternative Guest Additions ISO. The installer should launch automatically.

Version 6.0 is out. I have been using it for a week now. Can't get win 10 running in it properly the screen does weird thing, rendering locks up, vb freezes, and can't get access to win 10 at all. Although I have a suspicion it could be because i only have 4gb ram.

Thanks for the reminder, kato. I will eventually have to go with 6, but I'm always concerned about major upgrades of VB breaking my existing VMs, like you are experiencing. Hopefully the bugs will be worked out of it. If I can't run Windows in it, VirtualBox won't be of much use to me.

ok..finally got windows 10 running in VB6 running 4gb ram on intel cpu. I installed grim dawn and it loads and plays but very slow.
My other computer is an amd 6100 cpu doesn't with 4gb ram on it also but have a geforce 620 video card and i think that could be the problem.
will remove ram from amd computer and put it in the intel one and see if grim dawn runs better with the extra ram in it.
installed mint 19.1 on amd computer and it runs perfect with no glitches...as yet.

+1 have also installed it, but can't get 5.22 or 6.0 to run seamless with LM19.1 as host on any of my PCs, so sticking with LM19.0

I'm running kernel 4.20 on 19.1 and i don't have any problems with installing and running VB 6.0 at all on it. I installed windows 10 in vb on 19.1 and it runs smoothly, considering i only have 4gb of ram.

The fix on the Linux side for me is to install v5.2.20 guest additions (Linux host and Linux Mint v19 guest) inside the guest. If you are trying to get a Win10 guest working you might want to try the v5.2.20 guest additions.

At this moment, host Mint 19 and Guest Additions 5.2.20 are working fine with guest Windows 10.
