Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Hit:3 http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian bionic InRelease
You have added the repository for Bionic while LM 18.3 is based on Xenial. You will need to change that in your sources. Open Software Sources from the meny. Under "Additional repositories" mark the entry for Vitualbox and click "Edit URL..". The new line should read (copy and paste):

Code: Select all

deb [arch=amd64] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib
.

What if there are no entries in Additional Repositories?
Do I just enter it?
There are no entries in mine. VB works on my machine. I had a few hiccups to get VB to work on my machine, thanks to the help from LM forums they were solved.

Most probably you installed the version in the repositories.
If you wish you could remove the entry from the Software sources and then install the version from the repos. Or else remove it and start the whole process from the scratch:

Code: Select all

wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
echo deb https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.list
apt update
apt install virtualbox-5.2
Edit: changing bionic to xenial in the command lines above

That maybe so. when I checked in Menu under Admin there was no VB of any kind. How do I check?
Sorry! I was responding while you were still posting. I'll try your suggestion. Thanks!

Thank you, I'll have to to try it tomorrow.
Do I use

Code: Select all

apt purge virtualbox*
before your suggested code?

if one is already installed, then yes. You could check that by running:

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy virtualbox
If it says installed then run the code.

PS. I don't even have VB installed on my system since quite a while. Maybe I should have stayed out of this thread
