Re: How can I install Windows 10 in VirtualBox?

Post by Matthew_Wai »

I have just installed Guest Additions 6.0.0, but there is a problem.
When I double-click on a folder on Windows, it will never be opened. Then, if I click on an icon, e.g. the menu icon, on the Linux task bar, the folder will be opened immediately.

That could be a bug: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/18248

As I don't run win10 in VB, the only suggestion I've got is install VB 5.2.20 which you can download from oracle. Think you need to uninstall VB6.0 before you install and will also have to then install the VB 5.2.20 version of the extension pack and guest additions.

I'm not recommending VB5.2.22 because of this post:

which having just checked, I see you've posted there :)

I should install LM19.0 Cinnamon and VirtualBox 5.2.20 if I want no bugs. Am I right? Any other suggestions?

any software combination, can often be problematic, for some reason.
- even with the Windows System, as the base software & maybe even more so,

you can, still try out using that install LM19.0 Cinnamon and VirtualBox 5.2.20 , combination:
to see if there is still any bugs around.

you are not alone in this, as most of us, have had issues in this area, when switching to another Host System,
or even to another VirtualBox version on that Host System. :o

just keep trying out the various combinations, untill you find an combination that works on your machine,
& let us know how you are going with that, so that we can help you out - if we can do so.

NB: I've been through this scenario, on one of my Laptops & where both the Linux Host & the VirtualBox,
were both changed to a later version & it wasn't smooth sailing, either.

Yes, and for me LM19.0 cinnamon with VB5.22 or VB6.0 running win7 as guest gives no problems.

I have installed LM 19.0 Cinnamon, VirtualBox 5.2.20, Extension Pack 5.2.20 , and Guest Additions 5.2.20.
I have done the following settings but still cannot access the folder on the Windows guest.

Nothing has appeared as a network drive below:

I'm starting to run out of ideas:
  • Don't know if it is required for shared folders, but are you a member of the vboxusers group?
  • You would not normally share a folder under /media and the blob in front of your 'shared folder' name might be a problem - assume this is because you are not using a latin alphabet. Might be a permissions issue. Try adding a share for an ordinary folder like pictures from your home folder, e.g. /home/matthew/Pictures

Thanks a lot! I can access the following after restarting Windows 10.

/media/matthew/KINGSTON
/media/matthew/My files
/home/matthew

The first one is a USB device, and the second, a partition adjoining the ext4 filesystem.

Unexpectedly, I can access all of them from both Linux and Windows simultaneously.

Assuming you are referring to security, “Enable Network Adapter” has been deselected.

I'm glad you got there in the end.

I was thinking more of the file system, you could have a share /home/matthew which would be a bad idea as it would give the VM access to all your data. Turning off the network adaptor should prevent your VM talking to the internet = another safety measure.

Is the "Suspend" mode in Mint 19 the same as the one above?
Why is "Hibernate" absent from my Mint 19?

Windows will use all the screen after Guest Additions has been installed.

D:\ is not accessible. I already disconnected it, but it re-appears each time when I re-log in.
I have tried this command mountvol /r on Windows but to no avail.
And I cannot add this folder again. I am sure the path is correct: /media/matthew/My files

/media/matthew/My files sounds like an external drive connected by USB. Plug it in before you start win10 and then you need to mount it in VB:

Thank you. I just solved the problem simply by shutting down Windows and re-starting VirtualBox.

My files is a partition adjoining the ext4 filesystem containing Mint.
KINGSTON is actually an external flash drive connected by USB, and it works properly.
Yesterday, I could access My files. Today, I changed its driver letter. Then the problem arose.

I changed their drive letters and disconnected the original ones. Then I shut it down and re-started it. However, they re-appear although they are also accessible. How can I permanently delete the original ones, which are duplicates and unneeded? I want (D:), (E:), and (F:) and delete (G:), (H:), and (I:).
