Oracle VirtualBox is not responding

Post by santopitar » Sun Aug 25, 2019 6:29 am

Hi.
Next I explain my problem.
I usually keep the host (Linux Mint) updated to the latest version, including the kernel, and for some months I have problems with the latest versions of VirtualBox, which I update from the official repository.
What happens is that the Windows 7 virtual machine is frozen, and then VirtualBox is also frozen, a window appears in which the host (Linux Mint) indicates that "Oracle VirtualBox is not responding", so it gives me the options of waiting or forcing the closure.
When I force the closure and reopen VirtualBox, the Windows 7 virtual machine appears as aborted. If I start it again it does it without problems, after indicating that the last closure was not adequate, but it freezes again after a few minutes.
There are times when the freeze is at the beginning, when I try to enter the password, and other times when I use an application (Word, Excel ... etc.).
What I do is fix it using an earlier version of VirtualBox (I usually have to go back to "5.2.30-130521 ~ Ubuntu ~ bionic"), and the host kernel (Linux Mint) left it in the latest version. But when I tried to upgrade to the latest version of VirtualBox, I was given the same error again, with different versions.
I copy below the information about the context, and attached the file with the log of VirtualBox:
Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to help with the issue, as it's not something I've run into. To clarify, though, you're not updating VirtualBox from the official repository. That's still back on 5.2.23 or so. That you have 6.0.10 signifies you installed directly from Oracle (which is fine). Yes, updates come through the regular Update Manager channel, but the ultimate source is Oracle not repo.

For me, the v6.0.10 version is really buggy - video is scratchy, sound is intermittent, snapshots cause the VM (Windows 10) to abort. I switched back to the v6.0.8 version and it's much smoother. I have also found that KVM/QEMU VMs run faster and don't require nearly the host overhead that VirtualBox needs.

How does one do that? Does it require a VBox reinstall?

Same as pbear, sorry, not an issue I have experienced.
I am running from the Mint repository which is on 5.2.32.
When 6 came out I saw that some people were having issues (as is usually the case with new software :D ) so decided to stay with what was already working very well for me.

I had to uninstall v6.0.10 first (originally installed from the deb I downloaded from Oracle; did not add their repo), then installed v6.0.8.

I've always done it the other way (i.e., by adding their repo). I assume the steps are (i) download the deb file, (ii) uninstall 6.0.10, (iii) double-click the deb file to install via GDebi, and (iv) download and install extension pack. Did I leave anything out?

I have a similar problem with virtualbox 6.0.10. In my case not just the virtual machine with my windows 10 freezes but also my linux mint 18.3. I'm about to try my luck with the version 6.0.8 from virtualbox as some of you recommended instead of 6.0.10. I'll post my insights here.

Thank you all.
For now I think I will continue with version 5.2.32.
Just one thing. I installed version 6.0.10 because it is in the VirtualBox repositories (attached capture). Surely on the official website there is a later version.
I hope this thread serves to find a solution.

Honest, 6.0 isn't in the Mint repo. My guess would be that you added the Oracle repo but never installed. You could check with inxi -Sr.

Finally it was fixed. I'm going to explain what was the mistake I think I made, because it is quite silly.
When installing the new version of the Guest Additions in the virtual machine, before doing so I uninstalled the old version. I also did it with an application, which I usually use on Windows, which uninstalls the applications in depth: "Revo Uninstaller".
I think that was the error, because you can install the new version of the Guest Additions without uninstalling the previous version, and when finished only the new version appears in the list of installed programs.
Thank you for everything and I close the subject.

Just want to post quickly my insights. Unfortunately i can't really give any. Downgrading the version of virtualbox to 6.0.8 didn't help in my case. So I gave it a try with version 5.2.32 which lead also to a total freeze of the system. But this time it broke something in the filesystem. I had to restore a backup with timeshift. After that I had enough and upgraded to linux mint 19.2 tina. It seems to work now with the newest mint and the newest version of virtualbox.
