Question about installing Mint in a virtual machine

Post by muffybean »

I did hope I would get some advice regarding installing LM 19.3 Cinnamon on my Windows 10 machine as a VM in this topic. viewtopic.php?f=231&t=308748 but despite many views no help was forthcoming so have ploughed into via help that I have googled. I installed OracleVB fine but when I then went to install Cinnamon I think I have chosen the wrong OS.

As you can see I have selected Ubuntu (64-bit). Should that not be Debian (64-bit) as it is on my other Linux machines. Please help.

No. Linux Mint literally *is* Ubuntu. Except for the Mint-only packages.

Thank you pjotr, I had a backup done prior to doing this so restored it and started again and by default it goes for Ubuntu (64bit). However I do have one issue and that is with my graphics driver. I have an AMD Radeon HD 6850 video card on this machine. When installing Cinnamon 19.3 I did check the box for installing proprietary drivers but every time I go into the Linux VM I get this message.

When I run Driver Manager I get this return.

Your hardware matters little when you install to a virtual machine...

So how can I stop that warning coming up every time I start Linux VM? It seems to be running ok.

Install Extension Pack and insert Guest Additions CD image when the system is running.

Ah sry, forgot to say: Enable 3D acceleration in the VM's settings, simple as that.

I had already installed Guest Additions CD Image when I created Linux VM and installed so to be able to automatically go to full screen, anyway I opened terminal and this is what I got.
jim-bb@jimbb-VirtualBox:~/Desktop$ sudo sh VBoxLinuxAddidions.run
[sudo] password for jim-bb:
sh: 0: Can't open VBoxLinuxAddidions.run
jim-bb@jimbb-VirtualBox:~/Desktop$
Looking at that link I have not got /Desktop/addons directory in Desktop so do not understand what is happening here. Perhaps you can expand your advice.

I have tried to sort this out but there does not seem to be a /Desktop/addons directory and when I put in the terminal

Code: Select all

sudo sh VBoxLinuxAddidions.run
I get the following result:
jim-bb@jimbb-VirtualBox:~$ sudo sh VBoxLinuxAddidions.run
[sudo] password for jim-bb:
sh: 0: Can't open VBoxLinuxAddidions.run
jim-bb@jimbb-VirtualBox:~$
Appreciate any further advice on this.

How about the same advice I already gave?

Sorry GM, yes I did that and that got rid of the nag screen about the graphics driver, thanks for that. I was just wondering why that directory under /Desktop was missing that kukamuumuka referred to.

Ok then. But I only saw them suggest you install the extension pack, which is only needed if you want the guest to be able to access USB 2 or USB 3 devices on the host computer and thus had nothing to do with your problem.

Sorry, my typo, it should be

Did this OK and this was the resulting information in Terminal.
jim-bb@jimbb-VirtualBox:~$ sudo sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
[sudo] password for jim-bb:

the system is restarted
jim-bb@jimbb-VirtualBox:~$
Surely from what it says in line 6 it was already installed as I said in my previous message viewtopic.php?p=1741958#p1741958. That is why I could not understand about the absence of the graphics driver. Since gm told me about checking the " Enable 3D acceleration in the VM's settings" I have had no issues. Thank you both though for your help, it is appreciated. Unless you think there is anything else I should do, I will mark this as solved.
