Virtualbox 6.1 on iMac Core 2 Duo machine

Post by 1NEWLINUXUSER »

Hi. I was wondering if anyone might have an idea if an iMac Core 2 Duo with 8gb of ram might have enough power to run Virtualbox 6.1 & Linux Cinnamon 19.x or 20.X? I don'd expect or need blazingly fast speed as most of my computing these days is very basic, email, web searches, photos, music, etc. Below are some basic spes:

* iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 27-Inch Aluminum (Late 2009)
* 3.06 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (E7600), two independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip
* 3 MB shared level 2 cache, a 1066 MHz system bus
* 8 GB of RAM (1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM)
* 1 TB (7200 RPM) hard drive
* ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics with 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory

Thanks in advance for any questions or comments.

Hi, at least I ran successfully Parallel Desktop & VMWare Fusion on same configuration under Mac OS X. It worked well with many guest OSes. So why not VBox ?

Hi. My wife use to run parrallels & win7 on this this thing up until last year with little or no problem that I recall. I've got it now and I've installed VirtuaBox 6.1 and Linux Cinnamon 20 and while it seems to run ok it takes for ever to boot into Linux, between 5 & 6 minutes! I'm trying to find out why, if you have any ideas I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks.

Hi,
I have an older core2duo iMac (2008) with a 2.4GHz 2 core chip, 4GB RAM. I'm running LM 20 Cinnamon 64 bit. I installed VirtualBox 6.1 with LM 19.3 as guest OS. It is taking just about exactly 2 minutes to boot so something is not right. It's not LM20, so not a 100% comparison. I still haven't been able to add the guest additions but that's my problem. :-)

I did change some of the defaults. Under CPU, change to two cpus, I changed RAM to 1.5GB and disk space to 15GB. Oh, and increased graphics memory to 64MB.

I'd post my inxi results from the guest OS but guest additions isn't working yet.

Your's doesn't sound so bad to me! At 2 minutes it's virtually a screamer! Mine is taking about 3.5 minutes with 1 cpu and 2gb ram! With 2 cpus it takes 6+ minutes. I was told by some VB forum members that my cpu's do not support EPT or Extended Page Tables. Beyond supposedly enhancing the virtualization capability of the cpu I don't know anything else about it other than, and again supposedly, EPT was on the i3, 5, 7 & i9 processors. Mine are the core duo E7600 which do not support EPT so I guess I'm out of luck there.

Hi. I was wondering if you got it sorted out. Glad you got it faster than it was. I'm a little skeptical of what they told you because my chip is also a core2duo earlier model of your chip. I also don't have EPT. I've heard some people say that QEMU is faster than VirtualBox, but I don't think it is as easy to use and I've never tried it.
Best of luck,
Jamie

Thanks. I wouldn't exactly call in sorted out but it's probably something can live with for now. After re-reading your original post, I suspect a key difference in our two machines is the fact that your host is LM 20, if my understanding is correct, and mine is still osx High Sierra. It's not the fastest to boot either as it takes about 90 sec. alone just to boot into HS but I've read a lot on the internet and it seems a lot of folks who upgraded from Sierra to HS have similar boot times, even ones with ssd's! So, I guess mine not so bad there either! So, for now I'm just going to run HS until there is a significant issue, I get bored or I can't stand it any longer then replace it with some Linux version like Cinnamon 20, 21, 22, or what ever!

Thanks for your input and good luck to you!

Just out of curiosity to see how Mate 20 would boot in VB I installed it and it takes as long if not longer than Cinnamon to boot! I wondered that since it was suppose less resource hungry than Cinnamon it might load faster! Apparently things don't work that way, oh well, time to move on! :?
