[SOLVED] VirtualBox looks ugly

Post by mbnoimi »

Hi,

VirtulBox looks ugly under my Linux Mint 20 (using Mint-Y-Dark-Grey style) as shown below; VLC looks good and my Qt5 Configuration Tool doesn't show any error or warning.

May you please tell me what's wrong?

'Ugly' is undefined.

The problem is your Qt5 settings. Select the Fusion style, then select Custom for the palette, and choose 'darker'.

I already tried it but it doesn't fix the problem because VB shown grey instead of dark with stupid hyper links. In addition to that I don't like "darker" color scheme cuz I prefer grey scheme just like Mint-Y-Dark-Grey style

VirtualBox 6x has an ugly look. It's the same on 19x series. I don't like the new changes either, but I needed to update so I could install a testing 20.04 machine.

Update I tested a dark theme in 19x and it indeed did not only look ugly, but it very difficult to read text.

Where as QT VLC media exhibits no problem.

Why are you so bothered what the Virtualbox manager looks like? Okay so it isn't the most attractive default interface (same ugly appearance for Windows too) but I'd be more pissed if it did not work as it should. Whatever happened to form over function?
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

This is not the whole story. The ugly color scheme means it's hard to use it!

currently I've to modify whole system color scheme just to read of adjust some options in VB this is really annoying!

Looks great for me - hint - my theme ships with a QT color.conf file.
Another hint - it's a virtualbox issue - https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/18258

Fair enough, if your eyes cannot cope with the default it makes more sense. If kvantum has a Mint-X theme, try that.

It's made for Cinnamon, but looks OK in XFCE. Be sure to read the readme...

The other option if you don't want to go as far as changing your system theme is to modify your launcher to get Vbox to use the native QT Fusion theme. It's not dark, but it is usable

Code: Select all

VirtualBox -style Fusion %U
Image

Other ones you can try

Code: Select all

VirtualBox -style qt5ct-style %U

VirtualBox -style cleanlooks %U

VirtualBox -style cde %U

VirtualBox -style motif %U

VirtualBox -style plastique %U

VirtualBox -style Windows %U

Thanks a lot; This is a practical fix.

Thank you guys for quick responses.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install adwaita-qt
VirtualBox -style adwaita-dark %U
ES: Este tambien se ve muy bien sobre todo cuando en qt5ct tienes estilo gtk2;paleta: predeterminada con tema adapta-nokto
EN: This also looks great especially when in qt5ct you have gtk2 style; palette: default with adapt-nokto theme
