VMware - only using virtual memory

Post by djtlumic »

Hello there,
i hope this is not duplicate thread.

I found my VMware workstation 15.5.6 build-16341506 is not using physical memory at all. when i run VM it consumes about 300MB of memory
( ok to run VM shell ), but system ( win 7 ) and all running apps, normaly using gigs of memory ( fusion, solidworks,PS, etc.) dont increase my system RAM at all.

Also VM is full of lags and slow in many situations, 3d acc is ok.
I tried to change memory value, but i only found file in VM folder *.vmem changing.

So i suppose all VM ram is utilizing only on my SSD :/

Did someone encounter this? I am searching for better performace for more complex 3d models and smoother workflow ( trying to step in to commercial sphere )

Cinnamon 19.3 - 5.4.0-52-generic

PS i think app build or kernel isnt important, i made many system/kernel/app updates...same behavior.

Thanks for any advice

Hi djtlumic,

I've used VMware workstation 15.5.6 on Linux Mint 19.3 for a long time. Shortly I've upgraded to Mint 20.1. On both systems I can't see such a behaviour of VMware. I've started a Windows 10 VM on my system and I can see VMware is using more memory but no swap space.

By using the free command I can see VMware is using 4GB buff/cache memory from my system (exactly what I gave to my VM).

How much memory do you have on your host and how much is given to your guest? What does "VMware > Preferences > Memory" say?

Hi, thanks for reply.
I tried many values, range from 4GB-25GB. My system has 32GB, but ram utilization is same, as i said only *.vmem file size is changing to values set in memory setting :/

edit: htop screen
aslo i tried "top" command, after VM start only 2GB is in buff/cache, VM is set to 16GB

I don't think you have to worry about the *.vmem file. As far as I know the file is a backup file of the machines pagefile and it is only there if the VM is running (or crashed). Did you tried to reconfigure VMware workstation? This should be possible by deleting the .vmware folder in your home directory. On my system nearly everything in VMware workstation is running with default settings...

Or you can try a fresh install. The uninstall command is:

Code: Select all

sudo vmware-installer -u vmware-workstation --required
Locked

Return to “Virtual Machines”
