Virtualbox 6.1 and Mint 20.1 : Cinnamon stuck in fallback mode

Post by JackoBongo »

Hi,
I've recently upgraded my Virtualbox VM from 20.04 to 20.1 and ...Cinnamon keeps crashing on startup.
I've tried to change display adapters, upgrade everything (Virtualbox, VM's kernel ...), switch to software mode and the error is still here.

The configuration is the following:
Display driver is VMSVGA
3D acceleration is turn on (tried switching off without much success)
Guest add-on tools are up-to-date

The content of ~/.xession-errors is the following:

Welcome to the forum, JackoBongo.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

I was just helping someone on another thread get the monitor resolution corrected on a VirtualBox install of LM20.1 [solved!]setting default display size, so I know it can work. I have included the link to make it easier to compare the inxi information as that might give a clue as to what is happening with your install.
JackoBongo wrote: Mon Mar 15, 2021 9:50 am, switch to software mode and the error is still here.
Cinnamon will give errors (even when not crashing) when running in software rendering mode, so you can eliminate doing that to troubleshoot this issue.

I pulled out the following which does indicate the system was running in software rendering mode.

Code: Select all

dbus-update-activation-environment: setting CINNAMON_2D=true
** (csd-color:1629): WARNING **: 14:11:59.200: failed to get edid: unable to get EDID for output
** (csd-color:1629): WARNING **: 14:11:59.753: unable to get EDID for xrandr-Virtual1: unable to get EDID for output
Cinnamon warning: Software rendering detected: llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.0, 128 bits)
Cjs-Message: 14:12:03.465: Profiler is disabled. Not setting up signals.
Clutter-Message: 14:12:03.758: Sync method: PRESENTATION TIME

Cjs-Message: 14:12:07.295: JS LOG: About to start Cinnamon
Cjs-Message: 14:12:07.296: JS LOG: ACTIVATING SOFTWARE RENDERING
Cjs-Message: 14:12:07.297: JS LOG: [LookingGlass/error] Cinnamon Software Rendering mode enabled
The below indicates Cinnamon started, but I don't see a reason for the crash. The next lines are the indication the system went into fallback mode. Metacity (and the mate desktop) is the fallback mode when Cinnamon crashes.

Code: Select all

Cjs-Message: 14:12:12.043: JS LOG: [LookingGlass/info] Cinnamon took 4747 ms to start
Unable to open desktop file /usr/share/applications/caja-browser.desktop for panel launcher: No such file or directory

Maybe your system data will give us some clues.

I presume everything was working well in LM20 and you were not having this issue.

Your inxi information definitely shows Cinnamon not running properly and shows software renderering of the graphics. I do not yet have enough experience to know if the software rendering is causing Cinnamon to crash. I've not heard of that happening when LM20 is on bare metal, but I do not know if some VirtualBox settings might cause it to happen.

I do not recall if this caused crashing issues, but one of the common errors when upgrading from LM20 to LM20.1 was people not replacing configuration files at all the times it asked during the upgrade. The last line in section 3 of How to upgrade to Linux Mint 20.1 states, "If asked whether to keep or replace configuration files, choose to replace them." I recall this was asked multiple times during the install.

Are there any crash reports listed in the System Report app?

In a bare metal install, I would recommend restoring to a Timeshift snapshot which one is advised to do before upgrading, but you have a small install so I do not know if that is something you do.

As an aside: your docker repo is listed as bionic and not focal. I would not think that would affect this situation, but I wanted you to be aware of the mismatch.

This might not have anything to do with it, but what are your settings in VirtualBox Settings under Display?

Is plenty of Video Memory been added & is the Enable 3D Acceleration box ticked??

I'm not familiar with advanced graphics issues in VBox, but will mention that I just upgraded a Cinn 20.0 VM to 20.1 and it runs fine. So, I think it's fair to assume there's no fundamental incompatibility between 20.1 and VBox.

I wonder whether there was a glitch in the upgrade. Do you have the ability to restore the prior system state and redo the upgrade?
