***Solved*** Virtualbox error - exit code 1 (0x1) also how to increase vbox resolution

Post by toolmanz »

All,

Just started (today) using virtualbox vm to set up a windows 10 guest.

All seemed fine until I rebooted after a KERNEL update.

Now VM won't start?!?!
ksnip_20210415-193549.png
ksnip_20210415-193657.png
ksnip_20210415-193657.png (35.73 KiB) Viewed 3057 times

And this is the text error I received when I try to run VBOXCONFIG:

Code: Select all

sudo vboxconfig
[sudo] password for xxxxxx:
vboxdrv.sh: Stopping VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
vboxdrv.sh: failed: Cannot change group vboxusers for device /dev/vboxdrv.

There were problems setting up VirtualBox. To re-start the set-up process, run
  /sbin/vboxconfig
as root. If your system is using EFI Secure Boot you may need to sign the
kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load
them. Please see your Linux system's documentation for more information.
I did a search - couldn't find anything.

I am pretty sure its an ID10T error. (id ten t)

It is an Intel core I7 8700K and I'm running a triple boot scenario which works fine.
I have run Oracle VM in windows and never got this error.....

The only thing I can see is to "sign" the list of kernel modules which I haven't done - cuz I don't know how

Anybody seen this before? Did happen becasue I updated the kernel?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

You are absolutely right on your intuition that it may have been the way it was installed. :D

I followed the instructions at this site this time: viewtopic.php?t=300723

First I "purged" virtualbox from the system then followed the above instructions. Worked! :D

I think it was the "wget ....." keys command that I may not have done.

In addition, I was able to access the disk and memory setup that was there previously with the VM that wouldn't work.

Thanks Andy - Kudos - your question led to the solution.

Cheers

Did you install VB6.0 or 6.1 (the latest)? Now you have it working, you need to download and install the extension pack from here:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
under the heading "VirtualBox 6.1.18 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack".

Then when you have win installed in VB you need to install guest-additions. With win running, on the VB devices menu "insert guest additions CD image". Win should find it and run it, if not you will find it in "my computer" (or whatever it's called these days). When you install win, I'd recommend 60GB for your win virtual disk and select a dynamic disk - it will only use as much space as needed.

This will give you the full functionality that VB has to offer.

Don't save any data in the VM, you can set up shared folders in VB which appear as network drives to win.

A few other things:
  • I give win all my CPU cores and half my memory.
  • Access to usb devices, e.g. a stick - how? With win running in VB, on the VB devices menu, usb and you will get a list, click on the one you want. When being used by win it is unavailable to linux.
  • Seamless mode - I think is brilliant and the reason I run VB and not VMware. In seamless mode you get an integrated desktop.

A linux desktop and panel with the windows taskbar (win7) above with win applications running on the linux desktop. You can see my shared folders appearing as network drives in win.

I'll leave you to play :D

Well Andy its been an interesting and rewarding weekend.

Got most everything going and the VB does the job.

I have 1 complaint though - researched this to no avail... the monitor resolution is really bad.

Just can't seem to raise it .... it started at 800x600 (gak) and managed to get it up to a very odd 1023x767 and will go no higher.

I run at 1920xsomething in Linux and the screen in windows is ...well ....disappointing.

I am sure there is a way and I'll figure it out eventually. MAybe see if I can pass my GPU through to windows ....

Really happy with how things turned out.

Cheers

Did you install the extension pack in VB and then guest additions in win? I think you need guest additions before you can play around with screen sizes in win (it's a while since I had to install it).

My laptop Windows 10 guest runs at 1892*947, so higher resolution is possible.
As Andy says you have to have Guest Additions installed though.
One other thought, in VirtualBox settings, Display - Screen, set Video Memory to the maximum allowed.
MAybe see if I can pass my GPU through to windows ....
I do not believe that is possible anymore in VirtualBox...it is still possible in VMWare though..

You will need a second GPU. I can't speak for AMD, but nVidia are reported to be releasing a driver to allow VM passthrough. You may have to research it.

Thanks Kadaitcha Man - I will definitely look into that ... a promising lead.

Andy,

I do have the extension working and have managed to raise the resolution to 1600x900 - a great improvement over 800x600 :D

I used this to display the current data:

Code: Select all

vboxmanage getextradata $YOUR_VM_NAME enumerate
With output as:

Code: Select all

Key: CustomVideoMode1, Value: 1920x768x32
Key: GUI/LastCloseAction, Value: PowerOff
Key: GUI/LastGuestSizeHint, Value: 1600,900
Key: GUI/LastGuestSizeHint1, Value: 640,480
Key: GUI/LastNormalWindowPosition, Value: 116,39,1680,989
Key: GUI/LastScaleWindowPosition, Value: 84,56,1603,911
Key: GUI/LastScaleWindowPosition1, Value: 639,269,640,480
Key: GUI/RestrictedRuntimeInputMenuActions, Value: Keyboard,MouseIntegration
Key: GUI/RestrictedRuntimeMachineMenuActions, Value: PowerOff
Key: GUI/RestrictedRuntimeMenus, Value: Machine,View
Key: GUI/RestrictedRuntimeViewMenuActions, Value: Fullscreen
Key: GUI/Scale, Value: true
Key: GUI/ScaleFactor, Value: 1.05
Key: GUI/ShowMiniToolBar, Value: false
You can see the Key: GUI/LastGuestSizeHint shows the current resolution.

And this line to alter the keys:

Code: Select all

vboxmanage setextradata $YOUR_VM_NAME GUI/LastGuestSizeHint 1920,1080
I assume this terminal command works for all the keys ... remains to be seen.

I will continue to play with it.

Another clue I think.... :D

I will report back on any success .....

Thanks Again

All,

As it turns out I had to change all of these to a higher resolution:

Previous Settings:

Key: CustomVideoMode1, Value: 1920x768x32
Key: GUI/LastGuestSizeHint, Value: 1600,900
Key: GUI/LastGuestSizeHint1, Value: 640,480

to

Key: CustomVideoMode1, Value: 2048x1152x32
Key: GUI/LastCloseAction, Value: PowerOff
Key: GUI/LastGuestSizeHint, Value: 2048,1152
Key: GUI/LastGuestSizeHint1, Value: 2048,1152

Using these commands:

Code: Select all

vboxmanage setextradata "Windows 10" CustomVideoMode1 2048x1152x32
vboxmanage setextradata "Windows 10" GUI/LastGuestSizeHint 2048,1152
vboxmanage setextradata "Windows 10" GUI/LastGuestSizeHint1 2048,1152
And that is what I have now .....happy happy joy joy...

Better than I expected....

Thanks all

Forgot to mention that you need to reboot between settings changes.

All of the command line entries were done in my Linux mint terminal.

Whenever I'm in a VirtualBox virtual machine, I always have to adjust the resolution to 1680x1050, so much that I now just remember those numbers. My monitor's native resolution is 1920x1080, which is like what yours is. 1680x1050 seems to be the highest it'll go in VirtualBox, at least for my native resolution. Oddly, I never used to have this problem back in the early 5.* versions, but maybe Oracle borked something at some point?

Don't have that problem as you can see from my screenshot above. Guest additions installed? Latest version of guest additions? Using the right graphics driver (svga?) in VB?

I always choose VMSVGA. I'm not using Guest Additions though, as I never needed to in the past, and constantly doing that for every installation isn't practical, given how often I can wind up using VirtualBox and installing distributions. I'm okay with 1680x1050 if it means I don't have to faff about with Guest Additions. :P

Didn't have a VB to hand, yes it is VMSVGA, couldn't remember.

It is guest additions that will give you higher resolution, it's a two minute job, if that. With your guest running (assume win), VB devices menu > insert guest additions CD. If it doesn't autostart in win, just open 'my computer' and double click on the CD drive. If running a linux guest - not done that.

I just run Linux guests on a Linux host, mostly for testing my programs, running untrusted software, connecting to untrusted sources, and for YouTube videos. I'm aware of how to install it and have done it before, although I appreciate the instructions and hope it helps someone else.

It's been a long time since I've tried GAs, so I might try it out the next time I load up a VM, to see if it works. I say that because, I vaguely remembering trying it in the past, and it still wouldn't allow me to set 1920x1080. I'm going to not pursue this conversation though, as it's derailing the thread a bit, and if I have an 'issue', guidelines dictate that I should make my own thread, but since I'm not that bothered, I won't.
