I've been running Linux Mint Mate 18.3 under Hyper-V for about 3 years. 18.3 is EOL so I'm building a 20.3 VM (Mint Mate, as before).
Edit: as pointed out below, it should be 20.2, not 20.3.
Thanks to various forums, I've been able to get it installed and running. Now I'm trying to do a few tweaks to it.
Because of the fact that Hyper-V seems to want to use one, and only one resolution, and I have various screens I can use with this machine, I need more flexibility.
One of the ways I've been using the 18.3 VM is to use RDP, on the Windows host, to connect to it. If I'm connected to an external monitor which is higher resolution than the laptop, I can tell RDP to use the resolution of the external monitor and it gives me a higher-resolution desktop. I have xrdp installed for this.
Another way in which I've done this is to use another machine, connected via gigabit ethernet, as a thin client. From the VM, I run xterm with a display variable set appropriately. This opens up an xterm window on my thin client machine, from which I can run all my apps.
In both cases, I need to kill the xserver in the VM. Otherwise, running caja from the thin client xterm will cause the app to open on the VM desktop, not on the thin client. To do this, I would usually do:
sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop
on the VM and then use alt-F1 to switch to a text console, log in and fire up xterm with the display variable.
Alternately, if I'm using the RDP approach (from the Windows host machine), if the VM xserver hasn't been killed, it gives me some message about "Could not acquire name on session bus" and fails.
In my 20.3 VM, if I try to stop lightdm, it just hangs. The 18.3 VM goes black, at that point, until I do alt-F1. But 20.3 sits there with my command sitting on the screen and ... nothing happens.
I'm not that acquainted with 20.3 (yet). I need to get it working same as with 18.3. Any suggestions on what I need to do differently, what I need to install, etc?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Linux Mint 20.3 under Hyper-V
Hi,
Nobody is acquainted with Mint 20.3, since it is not yet available, even in beta.
Regards,
MN
PS: concerning the use of Mint 20.x guest (20.2 latest available) on Windows host, hyper-V as virtual machine software, with *YOUR* tweaks and various screens / various resolutions, I'm afraid you are alone...

Yep. <derp> got me on that one.Nobody is acquainted with Mint 20.3, since it is not yet available, even in beta.
Does no one know how to kill lightdm, on Mint Mate 20.2 and actually have it drop back to a console? That's probably all that I'm needing to do.
Re: Linux Mint 20.2 under Hyper-V
I may have a solution.
Login to the main session. <ctrl>-<alt>-F1 gets me to a text console. Login from there. From the text console:
sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop
No hang. No problems. I just have to go to the text console first and do it from there.
After that, I can RDP into it from my Windows host. I do NOT have the taskbar at the bottom with the start menu, etc.; I get that when I RDP into the 18.3 VM. I can <alt>-<tab> from app to app so that's not a complete killer. There's probably a setting I need to tweak to get that; I just haven't found it, yet. Naturally, if someone knows what that would be, feel free to sound off.
And no,
mate-panel --reset
does not get it done.
Also after that, I can create the xterm window on my thin client and start GUI-based apps and have them show up on the thin client. I never have the bottom bar, nor the start menu, from that view; I always have to start apps from the command-line but the windows show up in the taskbar on my thin client machine, making navigation easy. In that regard, it appears to be about normal.

Re: Linux Mint 20.3 under Hyper-V
The different combinations you tried sound interesting. After you solve the current problem, perhaps you could comment on the differences in response or network utilisation or overhead in the VM.
For people looking at a similar setup, you can also use x11vnc which opens the remote session using the regular session on the desktop, not a different one, and that might reduce the overhead.

Re: Linux Mint 20.3 under Hyper-V
Unfortunately, I seem to have spoken too soon. <Control>-<alt>-F1 is not working today. Apparently, that only works during a certain phase of the moon ...
Doing that, today, results in the VM hanging, like it does when I try to stop lightdm. I have to send a three-finger salute to reboot.
Back to square one.
