Using WINE or VM to detect WiFI? Make program not realize it's a VM?

Post by LoudAndClear »

Relevant version information:

Linux Mint 20 (ulyana)
Wine 4.0
VirtualBox 6.1.32

I have trying to use both WINE and a Windows VM to try to run a program called PokerStars to play online poker, which is legal here in New Jersey. They require you to run their client application in order to play, which is only available in Windows and Mac.

I can get the application running in both WINE and my Windows VM, but whenever I try to actually join a game, I get an error that reads like this:

Image

Based on the error message and the company's FAQ located here, it looks as if the program looks for surrounding WiFi connections to determine if the user really is in New Jersey. I assume they need to verify that information, given that online gambling is illegal in most other American states.

I'm trying to figure out how to verify that I am in New Jersey to the program's satisfaction, and I thought that I might be able to do this if I could somehow figure out how to make it think that my computer's WiFi is either WINE's or the VM's WiFi. If anyone has any ideas how to do this (or convince it to verify where I am in some other way) I'd appreciate it.

I ran the program via the command line + WINE order to get the terminal output, and this is what came up:

Re: Using WINE or VM to detect WiFI? Make program not realize it's a VM?

Post by Pierre »

that program .. PokerStars .. used to Run okay on an earlier version,
of the ./wine system .. but it is broken in the later version of ./wine.

NB: the latest version of ./wine is V5.x anyway.

there will be an reason, that the program is Banned in most others states .. . .

Seems to me the best party to answer this question is Poker Stars. Did you try?

By the way, to post an image, don't link to the page. Get the image location and put that link in rimg tags:

I did. I was put in touch with their "Geolocation Team" who were astonishingly unhelpful. They essentially told me to buy a cheap Windows computer since (like every other online gaming company) they don't invest any effort in accommodating Linux users. They also said something about not wanting to publicize how to bypass their own geolocation measures, which didn't make any sense to me. Hence why I'm now here looking for workarounds.

Apologies. I don't post on fora very often and I wasn't sure how to embed the image. Now I know.

Alas, I don't know the answer to the question, as I can't understand how the problem arises. In both cases, Wine or VM, the system is using your regular internet connection. Frankly, I wonder whether the problem actually is their location detection system. Which is to say, buying a cheap Windows machine still might not solve the problem.

The problem here is that PokeStars needs access to wifi scan, and a virtual machine and Wine uses NAT to provide internet to PokeStars, this means PokeStars have access to Internet Data but not to network driver itself, instead it uses a virtual driver that simulates a wired connection to your physical PC.

It won't work, cos in a virtual environment PokeStars don't have access to WiFi driver.

The only option is to have a dual operating system in that machine, so when you need to play PokeStarts you reboot with windows, you will need of course to install your wifi driver in windows.

But keep in mind, as soon as you install windows you may lose Linux loader Grub, you may need to reinstall grub after windows setup in order to be able to boot Linux again, assuming you have space for your windows partition.

I'm not an expert on grub, maybe someone can help here if you decide to proceed.
