A warning on debian-multimedia.org

Post by tmallafre »

Searched here and not found, so sorry if it's already posted:http://lwn.net/Articles/552960/rss => The May "Bits from the Debian Project Leader" posting includes a notice that the debian-multimedia.org domain — once the site of a popular Debian package repository — has expired and been grabbed by an unknown entity...

You should already not being using debian-multimedia.org since May 2012. The site was moved to the domain deb-multimedia.org (as per request of the DPL, as its not an official Debian project). See the site for details on updating your repository and keys: http://deb-multimedia.org/ (and note until the next UP is released you should probably use Wheezy and not Jessie)

Anybody still using the old one would not have a security issue unless they disabled signature checking.

adding to what xenopeek said:
- if you are using the Update-Packs the change mentioned above doesn't concern you: LMDE delivers a mirrored deb-multimedia already within its repos;

- if you're using LMDE but with the sources.list pointed to something else than the default repos (tracking directly testing for example) neither wheezy nor jessie are good alias (in my personal opinion):
 • wheezy is stable, in a testing perspective was left behind over one month ago (and this month was full of activity)
 • jessie, while is the correct alias for testing now, will be the next stable so if you plan keeping the system for some time (say around 2 years) it will become automatically stable somewhere around 2015 and not following testing anymore

Instead of using a code name in the sources.list it's possible to use the word 'testing':

deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org testing main non-free

This way, if a new release comes out, there is no necessity to keep an eye on the sources.list
I believe in everything, except humans.

The guy who took the domain name is not cool. He will probably try to make a lot of money by selling it later. Not fair.
But how could Debian board have let this domain name go away...
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

It wasn't Debian's domain, as detailed in the comments on the link. The holder of the domain (now of deb-multimedia.org) didn't want to be bothered with transferring the domain to a Debian trusted organization, as the DPL had requested--and elected to let the domain expire. Debian tried to work with the registrar to get the domain after expiration, but that didn't work out.
