[SOLVED] Can I install LMDE 2 on a non-compatible UEFI machi

Post by luedcortes »

Hello:

My BIOS is not UEFI compatible at all, so, after I install LMDE 2 MATE, I have this error:

error: unknown file system
Entering rescue mode
grub rescue>

Facts:
- Legacy/old BIOS style on my BIOS it's by default and there's no other option (UEFI doesn't exist at all)
- LMDE installation is not aware that is installing on a non UEFI compatible machine

Question:
- Can I say to LMDE that I am installing on a legacy/old BIOS style machine?

Thanks in advance.

are you using the auto-partitioner, when installing?.
or - are you manually, partitioning, via Gparted, before running the installer/.
- which may be the better option, to do, if you are using legacy bios.

which worked, just fine, on my bios based laptop. ..

You said so booting in Legacy (there is no UEFI option in a BIOS system) and LMDE knows it on installing (no efi partition exists or is selected to mount or created). Something went wrong on installing, that's all (nothing to be with BIOS or UEFI). Boot your Mint Live DVD and let us know your disk partitions with a gparted snapshot or the outputs of copy&paste following codes in a terminal.

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk -l
sudo parted -l
sudo blkid
Also some details about your machine, other systems installed, disks, etc., will be needed.

PD: Sorry pierre, you are right but he has already installed MInt. That is why I've posted after you.

There should be two boot options for the DVD. You picked the wrong one. I had the same issue with my machine which does have UEFI but it is not active. Just run the installer again from the other entry.

@ GregE
It's a BIOS machine (as he said) so it wont be the problem. I don't know your machine (neither the luedcortes one) but in mine it will only be possible if booting in UEFI/CSM mode, in any case UEFI DVD must to be pre-selected and the screens in POST are very different if booting UEFI or Legacy. The only machines I know that can mess such things on installing are MACs.

In other hand, LMDE Media has not boot option to choose from UEFI/BIOS but it is not the first time I hear such thing. Have you (and maybe luedcortes) got a MAC computer?

Luedcortes,

You seem to be working under the mistaken assumption that EFI/UEFI is some sort of feature that can be activated by the OS. It's not. EFI is a replacement for BIOS. If the OS installer boots on a BIOS-only computer, it's running in BIOS mode, it knows it's running in BIOS mode, it has no need to ask about EFI-mode options, and it should not attempt to install any EFI-specific code. In other words, it's phenomenally unlikely that your problem has anything to do with EFI -- if you're correct that your computer is BIOS-only.

The error you quoted looks like you may have used a separate /boot partition and used an inappropriate filesystem on it. Could you post partitioning details for your computer, as in:

Code: Select all

sudo parted -l
This will show us what you've got, which will enable more than a guesswork answer.

Just to explain myself better. I am guessing you have used a bios boot menu to access the DVD. When you do that there are two entries - one for UEFI DVD boot and one for just DVD boot. If you select UEFI boot on a non-UEFI machine you end up in your situation.

If you set your machine in the BIOS to boot from DVD as the first option then the disk itself will boot to the correct option.

So the simple option is to set machine to boot from DVD and it should just work. If you use the BIOS boot menu then select the non-UEFI option.

Please let us know how you are going.

Hi:

Thanks everybody for the answer: @Pierre, @JOPETA, @GregE, @srs5694

I've solved my issue by following GregE's last post, I've changed boot order on BIOS directly instead of pressing F12 to enter boot menu, then LMDE showed me a different initial boot screen, and finally I installed smoothly LMDE on my PC (not Mac btw).

Thank you again.

Regards from Uruguay.

Is it secret computer? I will be useful to know, 'cause we are trying to help people with their problems when booting/installing Mint. UEFI/CSM mode (which seams to be default in your machines) is the more dangerous mode if you don't know. Many others like you, are working with computer thinking they are BIOS and refusing to make change in UEFI/BIOS setting. If Windows is not present, a new installation, a grub-update and crash. We should be grateful to Windows, so please ... :? brand and model?

PD: Only to solve my confusion with this matter
luedcortes wrote:LMDE showed me a different initial boot screen
So threre is no a LMDE menu to choose from UEFI or BIOS on booting LMDE. And what's that different screen? Do you mean a GRUB menu with the same options than graphic?

When I said that "LMDE showed me a different initial boot screen" I wanted to say that the initial splash screen when booting Live DVD is different when installed successfully than when I had those errors that I told to this list. I think that the fact of defining DVD first in boot order on BIOS, said to the system to boot from one recognizable partition from DVD, MBR partition, and not UEFI partition, so the system not recognizes UEFI partition at all.

Thanks again for your help.

Best regards.

So MSI, as my GT laptop, but UEFI/CSM is not default on it.

Would try to see but problems with Mint-EFI (LMDE or LM) in some MSI computers are worse than splash screen.
Thanks and Good luck!
