In Cinnamon 3.0.1 sound applet show only digital output and only 1 profile of it (digital).
In Mate (1.14.0) all works: on "devices" i can choose one of many profiles, including "analog stereo duplex".

Update: after change output to analog output in MATE and re-login in Cinnamon, sound works.

I had a little trouble myself, it was corrected by going to synaptic and clicking on all Cinnamon 3.0.1 files and marking them for reinstall. After the reinstall all is working as it should. Maybe this will help you also.

If you have an issue please post it on the Cinnamon github page. Not sure how many of the devs will see a bug issue here.

Try installing PAV Control. Sorted my sound issue immediately.
