Newbie here.
Let's pretend that xyz.debian.app is a special math equation editor, but developer (assuming there's only one) decides to abandon development because he / she moved on to other things in life and let's pretend that no one will fork a new version. years go by and because the software relies on old dependencies, and assuming new libraries deprecated his api calls, and that his software no longer works. Then how would an end user still use this software?
This is a legit problem because I'm building this linux laptop for a math instructor who is about to retire. His mac is even older than macbook2,1 (mid 2007) that I'm going to give him.
Question: If xyz.debian.app support is gone, what is he to do, assuming he's stubborn (and in his own right he absolutely will not change software because it breaks the way he's been doing things, and he's been using xyz.debian.app for a long time that his project relies on, and there's no way he's going to convert the data etc etc. Does he stop upgrading his Linux? What's the work around for him to keep using xyz.debian.app but also to be able to keep his Linux up to date even well past LTS (long term support version of linux?)
Request: please stick to topic of making xyz.debian.app work going 50+ years down. I'll ask for a replacement software on another thread.

Package old software as AppImage, Snap or Flatpak package.

what you really have to do, is find the latest Linux version, that the install.deb file will work on,
& then setup that mac machine with that Linux version & that installed program.
this way, then that program is availble to be used, as it always has been used.
you now can't update either that program OR that Linux version, as they are both stuck in an Time Period.
-- that Linux may not be available for Internet use - either, but you would have to evaluate that risk, anyway.
this would give you the break, where you can now source an replacement, for both the Linux system & for that program,
& probably, also on an newer mac machine, as well.
& then setup that mac machine with that Linux version & that installed program.

Install an old version of whatever OS it will run under in VirtualBox.
