Sound not working in VLC, Totem - Exaile will not start

Post by Christof999 »

Hi,

Having two issues with mint debian testing.

First is that when I open video files in totem or vlc I get video but no audio.

However they work fine in GNOME mplayer.

Additionally exaile does not start and instead gives me this message.

/usr/lib/exaile/xl/library.py:17: DeprecationWarning: the md5 module is deprecated; use hashlib instead
import md5, os, random, re, threading, time, traceback, gc, sys

import gtkmozembed
SystemError: dynamic module not initialized properly

I am running an AMD X4 Phenom
Asus M3A78-VM, of course using the onboard sound.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

For vlc try going to tools>preference>audio>output module and change it to Alsa. If it doesn't work try changing to something else.
My version is not in English so names might be a little bit different from yours.

Hi.

Also just tried to run listen and got this message.

I also tried to run fceux and it didnt run until I used the command

python 2.5 fceux

then it ran fine.

Please help me crack this.

I can confirm this as well. No idea what the problem is.

I'll keep an eye on this.

I've found the issue with the help of somebody on the #linuxmint-debian channel.

Remove pulseaudio and reboot. You should then be good to go :)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
sudo shutdown -r now

Thanks,

removing pulseaudio got sound working in everything.

Exaile or Listen however still simply fail to start, and I can't get any usb mass storage devices to auto mount. I plug in my smart phone, nothing, e-reader, nothing. This happens on all three of my computers. Worked fine in Mint 9 too. Really frustrated with this, as I live and breathe usb mass storage devices. I made a post concerning this already.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers
Chris

I am afraid that there is a bug regarding Exaile. See for example, http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... le#p319390
There are some relevant posts in that topic.
I really wonder if Exaile plays for anyone in LMDE...

I got VLC audio to work by selecting ALSA as above.

I have additional problems with sound. AMSN, Emesene and Pidgin had no audio, however I was getting the system beep. I updated my OS then there are no sounds whatsoever, which is inconvenient. Is this something to do with the Pulseaudio removal issue? Should I try removing it? It always worked in Ubuntu flavour Mint.

Yeah, that worked fine, thanks!!

Skype works now, and so does Totem.

Another SIMPLE SOLUTION to sound not working after upgrade........ 8) 8) 8)
Go to ...Mint Menu>Preferences>Sound; this opens PulseAudio Preferences.
Choose Simultaneous Output tab and check the only box:- "Add virtual output device for simultaneous output on all local sound cards".
This worked for me after upgrading VLC from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 when i had no sound and Sound preferences >Hardware tab showed only "Dummy" output,
then return to sound preferences and choose the desired settings for Profile (will now be showing) under the Hardware tab.

Removing pulseaudio worked like a charm (whilst trying to fix it with alsamixer or the gnome-properties tool didn't).

THanks!
