Well, I'm glad I got that working now, but after looking at it a bit, I tried adding the degree sign (°) to it. Turns out it doesn't display right with it there (a  or some such gets displayed before the ° (degree sign) even though it's not present in the extension code). I thought it would look nicer with the degree sign in place but apparently there was a good reason it wasn't already included. Any chance it can be added somehow without also displaying that  before it, or am I just out of luck..?

Not sure about the degree sign===I would agree it's something in the code......

Just for grins---I've "created" a couple of rotating desktops...you need to do a bit of work, but until there is something like desktopnova or similar....Create a folder in /user/share/backgrounds, populate the folder with images & a xml file......I numbered the pictures to make it easy...it helps to have the pictures all the same size. Name the xml background.xml, background1.xml & so on....The name of the folder will be the name used in Background

As you can see--this will rotate 60 images with a set fade-in time between...also the xml will not show up in your background settings until a log out/in....

Now I need to make a editor that will auto-generate all of this :)

I want your weather icons, they're so much nicer than those "TV-style" icons included with the extension... Any chance you can pack them up and post them here?

Also, awesome background you have in that screenshot, and glad to know GNOME left in the ability to rotate backgrounds with an XML script, if I ever get a reasonable collection of backgrounds to rotate through that will come in handy.

I'm about half-way thru the set.....I'll try to finish them this weekend & pm you when they are done......

Yes--I was pleasantly surprised that it works---would be nice to cobble up a GUI for the process.....guess all in good time.......

For anyone who is interested.

I use simple Samba file shares (like Ubuntu) to feed a WD Live media player from my main box. I am using LMDE and Gnome3 from experimental. Nautilus-share no longer exists for Gnome3, but the answer is simple. Firstly you need to setup simple shares then install Dolphin and kdenetwork-filesharing. Then from Dolphin right click on a folder -> Properties -> Share -> Configure File Sharing.

Once setup all your shares are there even though they do not show in Nautilus. From Dolphin the shares are shown with a blue network icon. A kludgy hybrid but it works and is almost as easy to use as nautilus-share.

There are a few HowTos for setting up Samba in LMDE for Ubuntu style shares. You need to do that first.

Looks like Gnome Shell Frippery. I have mine set up the same way

http://intgat.tigress.co.uk/rmy/extensions/index.html

Just unzip and move to ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions

Mine now looks as close to Gnome 2.x as I want it to be, while still being pure Gnome 3.

:)

That's exactly right, glad you provided the link. The wallpaper is Mepisunderwater without the Mepis name. I just searched for mepisunderwater , don't remeber where I got it. If you can't find it I can send you a copy.

I have had a conflict on my daughters machine between Frippery and the simon04 weather app, yet on my desktop they co-exist. maybe I am missing some lib on one machine.

I will be interested in your result, if FPMurphy one works I will try it out.

So far I have loaded the Applications menu from Frippery with my Murphy extensions (unloaded the Murphy Applications one--it did not work as well)...no problem with it. I use a bottom dock, so I'm not interested in the lower panel extension---The only other one I will play with is Panel Favorites---I'm guessing that is the one that will be causing a problem if any of them will. I have not looked at the differences between move clock & shut down & the Murphy ones that do the same thing.....

Update: loaded the Favorites extension & it plays well with the Murphy extensions....I'll look at the differences between the move clock & shut down extensions this weekend.....

A few observation on extensions .......

A slight mod to Finnbarr's Applications Button Extension can give you an applications menu with a Mint icon that replaces the Activities item on the top left.

_init: function(mode) {
PanelMenu.Button.prototype._init.call(this, 0.0);
let label = new St.Label({ text: _("Applications") });
this.actor.set_child(label);

this._icon = new St.Icon({ icon_name: 'start-here',
icon_type: St.IconType.FULLCOLOR,
icon_size: Main.panel.button.height });
// this.actor.set_child(label);
this.actor.set_child(this._icon);

this._appSys = Shell.AppSystem.get_default();
this._categories = this._appSys.get_sections();
this._menuIconFirst = mode;

this._display();

this._appSys.connect('installed-changed', Lang.bind(this, function() {
Main.queueDeferredWork(this._reDisplay);
}));

// add immediately after hotspot
let children = Main.panel._leftBox.get_children();
Main.panel._leftBox.remove_actor(children[0]);
Main.panel._leftBox.insert_actor(this.actor, 0);
Main.panel._menus.addMenu(this.menu);
},

The order that extensions appear on the toolbar can be fiddled by playing with the code lines as in this example. or the above using a simpler approach
This change will move Finnbarr's Weather extension to the right and put it second last next to your name

this._weatherIconBox.add_actor(weatherIcon);
this._weatherButton.add_actor(this._weatherIconBox);
this.actor.set_child(this._weatherButton);
let _children = Main.panel._rightBox.get_children();
Main.panel._rightBox.insert_actor(this.actor, _children.length - 1 );
Main.panel._menus.addMenu(this.menu);

You can make the weather extension work any where in the world by putting in a dummy USA Zipcode and then altering the load URL line to point at your city.

const MUNITS = 1; // See the README 0 - Imperial units, >0 - SI (Metric) units
const ZIPCODE = '32901'; // See the README Enclose in single quotes
const WEATHERDATA_KEY = 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx'; // See the README Enclose in single quotes
const WEATHERDATA_URL = 'http://free.worldweatheronline.com/feed ... +australia + &format=json&num_of_days=5&key=xxxxxxxxxxxxxx';

const WEATHERDATA_UPDATE_INTERVAL = 600;

Where the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is your key from World Weather Online. Just search for you city and then copy the elements of the resultant URL into the code as per the above example of Melbourne, Australia.

We are seeing a possible LMDE 2012 developing or maybe a LMDE Gnome-Shell Edition. Autocrosser has themes covered, so all we need is a default Mint Theme, a Mint Icon applications menu and a default set of extensions tailored to alter the standard Gnome-Shell. Add standard Mint applications and codecs and Et Voila!

As far as the default G-S "mint" theme---I think that Half-Left's Deviant art theme with a bit of tweaking would work very well, all we would need to do is a bit of color changing in the menus..... http://half-left.deviantart.com/gallery ... 6#/d3bwxvt I've contacted Half-Left to see if he would do a all green variant.....

Use the Mint-X-dark icons....see what is the consensus on a default wallpaper...

I tried Finbar's applications menu & whilst it could use a icon instead of the "Applications"--it did not work as well as the Frippery menu....We just need to see if it can use a icon as well.....

Answer to above---YES we need to put forward a Mint Gnome Shell as a community option!!!!!!!!!

I can also make a screen rotator with Mint wallpaper without very much trouble.......
