New install of LMDE stuck at login screen

I installed the LMDE 201109 XFCE 32-bit on a spare partition, everything seemed to go well, the Mint 9 install on the other partititon still works, GRUB still works, everything seems OK.
But when I try to boot into the new LMDE install, it gets to the login screen no problem, but when I enter my password the screen goes black and then the login screen pops back up. It's not that I have the password wrong; I deliberately entered the wrong PW and I got an "authentification failed" error.
So... any ideas?

I have not yet tried LMDE-xfce 201109.
But this seems to trigger my memory, it occurred before.
Take a look at the bottom taskbad / panel, do you see some selection like system default, xfce, or something like that?
mouse over there, select xfce, then try key in user name /password, to see if you can get pass the login screen.

OK
I downloaded LMDE 201109-xfce, installation went OK, no problem login.
May be you have a bad burn?
Try download iso again, then do a md5sum check first before burning DVD at slow speed.
By the way, you can also use USB stick, I usually use unetbootin to prepare bootable USB stick.
