From what I recall on Linux Mint 17 Btrfs caused boot problems for installations without btrfs partitions. Decision was taken to cut Btrfs support from the installer as it was causing too much problems. Linux Mint 17.x are using Ubuntu 14.04 as a package base—not the most up to date to get a good Btrfs experience anyway. I'm using Btrfs on another distro, but I'd say it takes more hand holding than average Linux Mint user would be willing to delve in to (things like tuning what parts of your filesystem directory tree you disable COW for to fix performance issues, whether to use compression or not and which, and so on—ext4 doesn't need such tuning and especially with the older kernel on Linux Mint 17.x ext4 is faster than Btrfs in most if not all scenarios).
