I'm not sure whether you consider a new installation to be painful, but in any case: that's how it's done.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

Yep what Moem said:
You have to reinstall. YOu can't just replace the sources.list file and upgrade. The bases are not compatible. One is Debian, the other is Ubuntu.

...mainly because you would be "downgrading".
Ubuntu is based on Debian Testing and Debian Unstable (SID) with Ubuntu fixes interspersed.
LMDE Is Debian Stable.

Maybe but not sure. This would need a crosscheck. But Jessie was frozen 1 year after Ubuntu 14.04. Therefore they may well have some common packages and Jessie may have some newer versions also.

Don't forget to backup your important files if you decided to install LMDE. Losing them would be pretty painful.

Yep - I've run across several packages (can't remember which ones off the top of my head) in which LMDE 2 has newer version than Mint 17.x.killer de bug wrote:Maybe but not sure. IIRC GTK is one of them.
