[SOLVED] Hangs on LM logo while booting

Post by Pio2001 » Wed Dec 14, 2016 2:01 pm

Hi,
I've got LMDE2 installed on my laptop for years, but today, all of sudden, it hangs while booting. The screen displays the LM logo and won't get further.

I'm writing this from the same computer, with an old LMDE live version that is on a USB device.
There were two updates installed yesterday. I think one of them was Flash. I don't remember what was the other one.
The computer has always been hanging during log off, but never while booting.

I don't know how to look for problems or where are the log files etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I managed to solve the problem, so far.

I tried all the advanced options in the boot menu :
Linux 3.11 instead of 3.16 : worse. It hangs all the same, and ctrl-alt-del doesn't even work, while it works while 3.16 is hanging.
First alternate option for linux 3.16 : no difference
Second alternate option (systemd, if I remember well), no difference.

Recovery mode : the screen displays useful information : file system /dev/sda1 corrupted, run fsck manually.

I tried typing fsck, and fsck -? with no effect, but I noticed some lines before that the command was in fact fsck.ext4, not just fsck

I typed fsck.ext4 /dev/sda1, then the screen prompted some errors, asking if they should be fixed. I answered yes every time. Then, I rebooted, and now it seems to work fine :)

Pio, I recommend that you check the health of your hard drive. If it's SMART capable this should be easy. File system corruption is often the first sign of a failing HDD.

I used to remove the plymouth screen on my LMDE2. I prefered to have text boot.

Hi, thanks for the advice. The drive is an SSD.

Running smartctl -a /dev/sda | less returned

=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

There was no scan, the message appeared instantly. I suppose that it's ok then.

Maybe the problem arose the day before when I cut the power in order to shut down (pressing the power on button for some time).
I have to do this everytime, but it never caused file corruption so far. I always wait for 30 seconds after the shut down hangs before forcing the power off.

You should avoid cutting the power to shut down, it often causes this sort of problem.

To shut down and restart an unresponsive Linux computer, hold down CTRT-ALT-PRTSCR and typing REISUB (this is far worse than the Windows 3-fingered salute to achieve - it helps if you can borrow another hand). See

Also REISUB is BUSIER backwards!
