MATE 1.18 updates

Post by clem »

Introduction

Hi everybody,

This thread is dedicated to issues related to the MATE 1.18 update in LMDE.

As you may know MATE switched from GTK2 to GTK3. This changes quite a lot of things, and we'll try to address the confirmed issues here.

Confirmed issues

https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-panel/issues/504
https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-panel/issues/305
https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-panel/issues/572
https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-applets/issues/236

Resolved issues

- MATE freeze: In Firefox downloads, open the containing folder. https://github.com/mate-desktop/caja/issues/777
- Marco https://github.com/mate-desktop/marco/issues/251
- mate-themes was updated (version 3.14.6-1).
- mintmenu: Rounded borders with Mint-X (this will introduce the loss of custom border colors) - fixed in mintmenu 5.7.8 and mint-themes 1.5.0
- mintmenu: Apps which require su-to-root do not run - fixed in mintmenu 5.7.8.
- Text for desktop icons are black and unreadable - fixed in caja 1.18.2-2+betsy.
- Mate notification area crashes. Fixed in mate-panel 1.18.1-2+betsy.

Notes

- When reporting theming issues, make sure to post a screenshot and specify which theme(s) you are using.

I'll edit this post as we go along. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

- If I try to open in Firefox downloads the folder something downloaded into, then MATE freezes

- volume control disappeared from the panel, and one cannot add it anymore

@cirmos: I can't reproduce the issue with the volume control. Make sure mate-volume-control-applet is running. Run it manually to see if it works. Check in Startup applications to make sure it's checked. And don't hesitate to run "mate-panel --reset" if you want to reset your applet configuration.

@Clem: if the intention is to use this thread for bug reports, I'll post a few of mine:
  • Firstly - here's my setup:

    Code: Select all

    System: Kernel: 3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: MATE 1.18.0
               Distro: LinuxMint 2 betsy
    Machine: Mobo: SAMSUNG model: RV411/RV511/E3511/S3511/RV711
               Bios: Phoenix v: 03PA.M001.20110312.XW date: 03/12/2011
CPU: Dual core Intel Core i3 M 380 (-HT-MCP-) clocked at 933 MHz
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GT218M [GeForce 315M]
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.4 drivers: nouveau (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
               Resolution: 1366x768@59.99hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on NVA8 GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.2
Network: Card-1: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller
               driver: r8169
               Card-2: Broadcom BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter
               driver: wl
Drives: HDD Total Size: 250.1GB (5.4% used)
Info: Processes: 171 Uptime: 3 min Memory: 627.0/5844.6MB
               Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.1.28

  • Spacing of icons in notification area are as below:
    Screenshot at 2017-05-02 14-34-38.jpeg
  • Lost all Wireless for no reason, the usual fix of restarting nm-applet and/or network-manager had no effect... had wired (eth0) though. but no wireless adaptor seen.
  • Bleachbit as root (which uses su-to-root -X -c bleachbit) to launch does nothing from mint menu - launches fine from mate-terminal
  • CPU (i3) is constantly running. Usually system load at idle is 0.08 or less - since update never below 1.00
There's more, but I really don't have much time today... I'll post more if I get the chance

Just applied the latest updates - CPU back to normal, Bleachbit and other apps requiring root launch fine from mint menu... well done guys and gals ;)

(still wide icon spacing/padding in notification area... not sure about wifi yet)

I'm using GreenLaguna theme with MATE-Faenza icons. The minus sign icon from the selectors in desktop configuration menus (font size, panel size, etc.) is missing and replaced with a red cross - not sure is this due to theme engine or to icon theme...

"Hangerőszabályozó" = volume control
"Nyomkövetési/töréspont csapda" = "Trace/breakpoint trap"

This is GTK3. There's nothing themes can do to change that.

One that you'll say I shouldn't be using on LMDE... mint-y dark with mint x icons ;)

BTW, I spoke too soon; CPU is back to 1.00 and above at idle

That happens when GTK2 and GTK3 code is being mixed. Typically here it looks like part of your MATE desktop wasn't properly updates.

Make sure all your MATE packages are 1.18:

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep mate | grep betsy
And if you didn't logout after the updates, please do so in case you're still running the old DE.

You can read minds :)

I'll just give you that, in case it helps: https://github.com/linuxmint/mint-theme ... a370bf9175

But other than that, you're on your own :)

LOL, well, nearly ;) But it was fine before the update... I'll try another dark theme and see what happens

OK, I tried with Blackmate... it's fine... my own fault  Sorry if I had anyone searching for a bug that wasn't there (well, it's not there but it is here ;) )

Clem: I don't know if the following is related to the "Notification Area" crash or not.
I just ran the 1.18 updates but Not the mate-notification-daemon package... it still borked

Also:
1. when moving items from one panel to another it just shows a black strip, need to log out/log in to get it working
2. when taking an item in the Menu and (right click) "Add launcher to panel" the entire panel freezes, requires reboot.

The problem with volume control is solved, thank you.

I just got this update "mate-panel", I am now able to create a new "Notification Area", all else seems to be working OK.
Thanks Clem

*** PS: item 2 in my post above was not fixed. "2. when taking an item in the Menu and (right click) "Add launcher to panel" the entire panel freezes, requires reboot." This is a royal pain.

I do not use the default configuration, I modify to the Traditional Mate / Gnome2 style and the use Menu Bar instead of the Mint Menu. I also use several launchers and shortcuts in the panel. I find it More Intuitive (and less clicks) than the Mint Cinnamon style that was thrust upon us. :-)
thanks again

The icon spacing issue is fixed in Mint-Y in master. With most things in Mate now gtk3 the theme likely won't work well in LMDE.
When I give opinions, they are my own. Not necessarily those of any other Linux Mint developer or the Linux Mint project as a whole.
