Sorry for the brief links, I just didn't expect these issues in LMDE. I thought we still have some time to fix them for GTK+ 3.18 (for Mint 18.2), now it looks like GTK+ 3.14 is affected as well.

This is GTK3. There's nothing themes can do to change that.
Well, it doesn't happen with Mint-X and Adwaita. :)
I can reproduce it just by setting GTK+ theme to some of mate-themes, leaving icon theme as is (Mint-X in my case).
I'm in Mint 18.1 now though - apparently it's not just LMDE issue.

I did... well htop actually - it was caja; but she's been behaving herself for the last hour or so ;) All seems back to normal now... although I'm keeping my eye on memory usage, as one advantage LMDE has over Mint 18 is 200mb+ less memory usage under the same conditions... ATM, it looks like they're almost the same. I'll reboot later and see if the memory creeps up again

It's running how it was before the updates, Joseph - I still don't have scrollbars, but I never use them anyway ;)

:) no problem, thanks for the rapid assistance.
Yup, I too never expected any glitches with LMDE!

Linux Mint Theme - no customisations

Since the update of Mate, the desktop icons for my USB connected drives have grown a bit while all other icons don't seem to have changed in size (see attached image). Furthermore, the icon for YAGF (Graphical frontend for Cuneiform and Tesseract) is huge in the dialog "Open With" and the list of "Other Aplications". In Mint Menu the icon size for YAGF is quite normal.

PS. Caja always starts behind the currently active window when using the assigned keyboard shortcut or Mint Menu. When I start Caja by double-clicking it's desktop icon the Caja window will appear on-top of the previously active window. Nevertheless, when I click on Caja in the Taskbar the Caja window moves to the front and Caja can be used normally (as far as I cant tell for now).

Using the Clearlooks controls and ClearlooksRe window border, my title bars are grey, rather than blue, as they should be. Also, icons in the task bar are all vertically cropped (they weren't before the update).

I still can't get mintmenu to work. I disappeared from my panel after the updates yesterday and the latest updates today did not solve the issue. I have mintmenu 5.7.8.

If I try to re-add mintmenu using the "add to panel" dialogue, nothing happens. I hit the "add" button and nothing appears in the panel. I am able to add other applets without a problem, including the other menu applets.

Thanks for the futher package updates today that fixed some of the other initial problems.

I think Clearlooks is not compatible with Gtk3, now that Mate has "upgraded" to that. Do you have the TraditionalOk theme? That is (basically, perhaps entirely) a Mate version of Clearlooks that works fine with Gtk3 and gives you the Clearlooks appearance.

Looks like these are all the themes that Mate is maintaining: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-th ... top-themes

TraditionalOk seems to be part of the mate-themes package availabe in the LMDE repos, so install that if you don't have it.

I'm in Mint 18.1 now though - apparently it's not just LMDE issue.
The icons themselves are up to the theme.. but the widget itself changed between GTK2 and GTK3. It used to be a number with two little arrows, it's now a box with a number and - and + buttons.

Try to test it from git... like this:

Code: Select all

apt install git
git clone https://github.com/linuxmint/mintmenu.git
cd mintmenu
./test
This should run mintmenu in a window and you should be able to see errors/issues in the terminal if it fails to launch.

The move of Mate to Gtk3 means themes need to be updated to properly support it. Things like Mate panel now rely on different theming then they used to.

Thanks for the help.

I ran the test version from a terminal window and it launched in its own separate tiny window from which it worked fine. So it did not fail to launch. But I did get some errors. This was the output:

@clem,

I did the mate-panel --reset command and logged out/back in after it reset my panels. However, the notification icons are greyed out and spaced out as the others have stated. I'm wondering if this is theme related as opposed to a change in gtk versions? I'm using paper/vertec-dark customized theme and it's messed up somehow.

Did you test using Mint-X? As noted above themes need updating for some of the Mate stuff since it now uses the gtk3 theme vs. the gtk2 theme. Since LMDE uses a fairly old gtk3 version I'm not sure how many 3rd party themes will properly support it.

Re: MATE 1.18 updates

Post by drt »

I have a desktop running LMDE that got some updates yesterday. In the update it said that some packages could not be downloaded but I continued anyway. Today the desktop is not putting up the desktop except for the background picture. The HPLIP program did pop up a message: No system tray detected in this system. Looking at this thread I used dpkg -l | grep mate | grep betsy and found 4 packages are 1.16 while the rest are 1.18. On this laptop that wasn't updated yesterday all the packages are still 1.16. So the problem must be the four 1.16 packages on the desktop. The packages are:

gir1.2-mate-panel 1.16.0-1+betsy i386
libmate-panel-applet-4-1 1.16.0-1+betsy i386
mate-panel 1.16.0-1+betsy i386
mate-panel-common 1.16.0-1+betsy all

I think it is a safe bet that these packages are the problem. apt-get update does not do the job. Can somebody tell me how to get them?

Thanks in advance,

Don

I think Clearlooks is not compatible with Gtk3, now that Mate has "upgraded" to that.
Clearlooks-phenix-theme is a GTK3 port of Clearlooks and is available in the repo.

Hi Clément.
I'm a bit surprised this upgrade doesn't seem to have been tested and fixed before it's released.
I may be wrong of course.

I have no big problem here however.
I've tried a few themes and they don't work well so I'm sticking with Mint-X-Blue for the moment, while this is fixed.
On some themes, I get black text on the dark panel, so it's unreadable. (LX-Light-Brave for instance, available on opendesktop.org)
It was fine before the upgrade to Mate 1.18.

Merci,
François
