I see all this LMDE3 talk and I really don't see much to it really? How long will LMDE2 be supported after LMDE3 comes out? Also, how do you know your on the most secure kernel? I've searched the net but don't find much about any of my questions. On regular Mint there is a kernel program on the 'update' program.
I'm running Kernel~3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64

Re: LMDE2 life and kernel question ...
LMDE 2 is based on Debian 8. For LMDE 2 the perating system packages and most additional user program packages come directly from the Debian 8 repositories. Packages from Debian 8 are fully supported till June 6th 2018 by the Debian security team and maintainers. After June 6th 2018 critical packages are maintained for another 2 years by the Debian LTS team (https://wiki.debian.org/LTS).
LMDE 2 also has its own repository with packages for Linux Mint developed or added programs. This receives upgrades in a semi-rolling fashion; as soon as a stable release is done for Linux Mint developed programs it is packaged and made available on LMDE 2 (first in the testing repository). After LMDE 3 arrives only critical bugs will be fixed for LMDE 2 till its end of life date. Whether that is June 6th 2018 or June 6th 2020 we don't know yet.

Xenopeek!
I think I'm going to go ahead and get rid of my Mint 17.3 KDE and go to LMDE2 on my desktop computer. I've ran into so many bugs with this computer where my laptop with LMDE2 is flawless

The current version of the kernel package linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 is 3.16.43-2+deb8u2. See https://packages.debian.org/jessie/linu ... .0-4-amd64. It is available as a level 4 security upgrade on LMDE 2. There are no other kernels.

That is certainly true for the main Jessie repositories, but also kernel 4.9 is available for Jessie and LMDE 2 from the jessie-backports repo.xenopeek wrote:The current version of the kernel package linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 is 3.16.43-2+deb8u2... There are no other kernels.
