Kernel: 3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit)

Post by Pepi »

A friend of mine is pretty up on Linux (server) stuff. He thinks I should not be running a Kernel at 3.16? He thinks it isn't safe in today's hacking world. I told him this Kernel is a LTS kernel and it works great on my LMDE2 system. What do you guys think? I know I've read some of you are using the back-port and using a 4 xxxx something kernel.

I do a lot of my banking on this PC so I want to make sure it is safe

Thanks

Kernel 3.16 is supported and will receive security updates until 2020. See the link below

From that it appears that 3.16 is the Kernel you should use if your system runs fine on it. I will show this to him

Of course. As we often say: "If it works, don't touch it"

Some people you cannot convince no matter what. He still says my laptop is not safe to do banking on  Oh well, it's a lot safer than using Windows

He is confused with Ubuntu's kernel cycle where 3.13 was the LTS kernel.

Nothing wrong with that kernel- it is less than a couple weeks old.
