[SOLVED] X server doesn't start after update (level 4)

Post by JackStarborn »

Hey
Maybe I was looking for a bad phrase, but I did not find an answer.

For several days, Mint Update showed me an update with level 4, I ignored it because I had a job to do.
I do not remember the exact package name but it was something like xorg-wayland

I installed it yesterday. The X server did not start.

I am using AMD HD 7850 pitcairn with an old proprietary driver (fglrx) and from my understanding of logs it seems to be the reason.

Here are the logs (/var/log/Xorg.0.log):

Re: X server doesn't start after update (level 4)

fglrx works on Mint 17.x and not Mint 18
The best approach would be to delete tha ap you installed with

Code: Select all

 apt purge ap
.
After purge and initial alphabets of the ap, press tab which should prompt you for the name.
Good luck.
As a precaution it's better to back up the system with applications like clonezilla
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

Deepak

Hey deepakdeshp!
Thanks for response.
Actually, I found another advice on the Internet and used it. I run this command as root:

Code: Select all

sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
After that i simply reboot and to my delight,
the Cinnamon desktop greeted me.

Best Regards
