I am having trouble installing VMWARE on Linux Mint Debian Edition

Post by explodingbee » Thu Mar 22, 2018 4:03 pm

I am somewhat new to Linux. I am using LMDE2. I want to install VMware so that I can run Fusion 360 (a CAD program) and MS Word on LMDE2 and then maybe even delete my Windows 7 Pro operating system. (I am dual booting with Windows 7 and LMDE2 right now.)

I open up the software manager and type in the search box "vmware." The system comes up with a number of addons and tools but not the program itself (as far as I can tell). VMware is not that obscure a program and if the software manager has 60,000 programs, as I have read that it does, it should have the VMware program, right? I don't know what is wrong here.

So then I thought I would try to do it in the terminal (something which I have never done before). I typed "sudo apt-get install VMware-Player-14.1.1-7528167.x86_64.bundle" . The system says that it can't find the program. (It is located in my "downloads" folder.) So what can I do to install this program? What am I doing wrong.

VMW is no free software; so it is a matter of the license.

AFAIK, VMWare Player is free of charge for private use.

"Free of charge" is not the same as free software.

Consider virtualbox from oracle instead. There are a lot of people on the forum using it, so lots of advice if you get stuck. It's available in the repos, but an old version - most people recommending downloading the latest deb from oracle. I'm running the version in the repos 5.0.40 and more than happy with it.

I agree with AndyMH---VirtualBox. I tried VMWare and didn't like it.

I'm aware of that, but I can use it non-commercially without legal implications. Do you want to imply, that Debian prohibits the installation of proprietary software? I haven't used VMWare on Debian yet (presently no need for it) but installed it on other host systems without problems.

I don't use VMW and so I do not have any motivation to deal with their license. But it is very well possible, that they restrict the distribution of their software by third parties.

you can use VMWARE on your copy of LMDE2 - - but it won't be found in Software Manager, though:
- you would have to get VMWARE direct from their web site:
https://my.vmware.com/en/web/vmware/fre ... layer/14_0
whereas most folks on this Forum would suggest to use VirtualBox instead:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
rather than the VirtualBox that is found in Software Manager itself.

it is also correct that VMWARE is Free for Personal Use Only.
