How to install testing (buster) kernel on LMDE 2?

Post by cm1 »

Can someone give me instructions on the proper way to update just the kernel on LMDE 2 to the testing (Debian buster) version?

Buster, in general, is not compatible with LMDE.
It is a different ecosystem, similar roots, but different.

so... there is no "proper" way to do it.

You can add the Debian repos, and then try that. A totally borked system is quite possible.
Just to experiment I did upgrading LMDE from Jessie to Stretch several times. I was unsuccessful. Perhaps just the kernel could work.

If for some reason you actually Need a more modern kernel you should install a more modern system.
Stretch is like a rock.
(Buster is actually pretty good at this point, I have it on a couple machines that are in daily use, but remember it is still TESTING, for a reason = stability)

all that said, the kernel used by Jessie/LMDE is still supported and should be fine. Updating kernels is "not a thing" in Debian, except for security updates, and you already have those security updates in the Jessie pipeline until 2020 ttps://wiki.debian.org/LTS

*** we do not know if Linux Mint will provide any support for LMDE2 after LMDE3 is released. What I have read is very vague, and my direct questions have been unanswered.

I would be careful touching the kernel if you have an nvidia graphic card. Check before upgrading that the drivers compatible with your card are available.
Before going to Buster I would check in the backports to see if the kernel there is enough for you. Currently 4.9 is available. And of course it has also the nvidia drivers in the same repo.

my Buster now has 4.15.0-2-amd64 (stretch is 4.9.0-6-amd64)
Sid is newer but I forget the exact version
I think they all come from here https://www.kernel.org/
Debian vets them a bit (maybe edits too also), not sure about Ubuntu and Mint

as Killer said I would be cautious with any of them except what is available thru your own disto.

Thanks all, I ended up just compiling the kernel from source.
