It's nice if it helps you to install.

But we still don't know what is causing this bug. And this is the most important :?

Yeah it is nice I can install now but did you get anything out of the error messages I've posted for you?
Thanks

Unfortunately not. I have just seen that you had exactly the same error than previously posted.
You have an UEFI system? With secure boot enabled?

LMDE 2 Betsy installation problem

Postby ajyotirmay » Tue Apr 28, 2015 9:38 pm

I've been trying to setup besty on my laptop, the liveCD is up and running perfectly but when I launch the installer, after filling in my username and other personal records it freezes. It just doesn't moves on from there even if I left it for several minutes.

Thanks for posting the screenshots in addition to fdisk output.
I still can't reproduce the issue and don't know what might be causing it, so I'll have to ask you for an experiment.
I see you have two physical HDDs. If you don't mind and have some time to do it, disconnect one of them (I mean, unplug both power and data cables) and run the installer again. No need to actually install Betsy, just check if the installer still freezes at the account screen or proceeds to the partitions screen.
Then connect that HDD back and disconnect the other one, and do the same check again.

Thanks, Monsta. I'll do as you suggest but it may be some time before I get back to you as "real" life is getting in the way of my interests at present

My apologies for the long delay. I was certain that I had replied to this post within a week but canot find my answer, so must assume that my memory is at fault.

I did as you suggested but the result was the same whichever hard disc I had connected: the installer freezes at the same point.

In the meantime, I've given up on this issue and just await for a solution from the developers.

Oddly enough, I managed to overcome this problem by stopping the installer in terminal via Ctrl+C... and then it magically unfroze and continued to the disk selection screen.

Thank you! I had exactly the same problem and never was able to fix this error. I will install LMDE 2 immediately as I prefer it to regular mint.

Just to confirm that the LMDE 2 - Cinammon - 64bit iso currently available for download at http://www.linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php still presents this problem (as of today!: July 22 2015).

The "stopping the installer in terminal via Ctrl+C" trick does permit to bypass this flaw, but it feels so sad to me that such a beautiful piece of work as LMDE 2 might present itself with such a bad "user experience" in the very first steps of its installation. I mean it would be too bad that someone interested in the Linux Mint Debian Edition experience, probably driven by the many excellent reviews LMDE, and thus LMDE 2, has all around the web, would be faced with having to execute such a hackish operation (for newcomers anyway) to be able to test-run LMDE 2.

I've experienced exactly what was described in all the previous posts in this thread, so I won't copy/paste outputs that are totally similar to what has already been seen. One thing that might be of interest to whom it may concern is that I was installing LMDE 2 on an external SSD, hooked through a SATA/USB3 adapter connection to a Clevo W150HR laptop.

Another relatively annoying point for me was that I wanted to have my /home partition configured as a LVM2 logical volume. Although all my LVM2 logical volumes were created (through the command line), I found no way of accessing them in the LMDE 2 installer, to select one as my /home partition that is. Once again not a fundamental problem but a little glitch that might stop some people from going further and discover the wonders of LMDE...
By the way, could anyone tell me where I should post this last remark to suggest a future enhancement of the installer ?

LMDE certainly deserves to get much traction as it stands, in my opinion anyway, as one of, if not THE most accessible, stable and polished Linux distribution available today, it being Debian (8) based making it particularly stand out. Having less experienced newcomers repelled by small glitches in the first moments of their experience with LMDE would be a pity in my eyes.

Thank you.

Hi everyone,

I just encountered the same issue on a fresh install with an USB key.
After searching for hours, I finally stumbled on this topic and tried the installer launched via the command line followed by Ctrl + C when the installer stalled on User informations step.
And it worked... the install process could go through.

Here is the command line output :

Code: Select all

This my third installation with the same key/iso, and the first time it hanged like that.

Hi,

If you're affected by this bug, please try the following version of the installer and report the terminal output?

https://github.com/linuxmint/live-insta ... 03_all.deb

It's the same version but with additional debugging info/traces being written. That should give us a more precise idea of exactly where in the code the installer is hanging.

To try it:
- Launch the live session as usual
- Download the deb file and install it
- Launch the installer from the command line (we're interested in the output, especially how far it gets before hanging) with "sudo live-installer"

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help us fix this bug.

That looks like a permission problem.. can you use sudo in front of the command?

Code: Select all

sudo live-installer

PS: If you get the same error, please give me more info about your sda disk (partition table type if any, partition layout etc..).

It's a different problem as it's a different installer. Main edition uses modified Ubiquity (Ubuntu's installer) while LMDE uses its own installer.

Thanks, we now have a better idea of where thing are hanging, but we still need a tiny bit more info to understand why it's happening.

I added even more tracing info. Can you use the following installer: https://github.com/linuxmint/live-insta ... 15_all.deb

To try it:
- Launch the live session as usual
- Download the deb file above and install it
- Launch the installer from the command line (we're interested in the output, especially how far it gets before hanging) with "sudo live-installer"

Thank you for the updated live-installer.

Opened terminal and typed sudo live-installer and the output was, firstly, as in the previous attempt (see my last post)

For some reason, I then hit Enter twice and the terminal output continued and then the partition screen appeared.

I was able to continue the installation without problems and am currently applying all the updates.

The only downside at the moment is that the monitor maximum display is 2048 x 768 and I cannot find the nVidia drivers in the menu. Are they there as in the Main edition of Mint? If not, do I have to download it from nVidia?.

Thanks tenfoot,

In the output that you pasted here... can you indicate "where" you pressed RETURN?

In other words, I need to know exactly when it hangs... i.e. how much of the output is written before it does.

With that info I can understand which of the partitions it hangs on, and at which step of the code.

If you don't remember, please run the installer again, and paste the output when it hangs.. but without pressing ENTER.

Actually, don't bother.. I just found out.

We're calling "gdisk -l /dev/sda" at some stage and I'm pretty sure that hangs on your computer. You can try and run it directly in the live session to see if you can catch why it's waiting for you to type something on the keyboard.
