Linux Mint Debian not accepting my username and password.

I am new to Linux and I decided to try Linux Mint Debian. The installation was easy but afterwards when I enter my username and password to log in it says “incorrect username or password. Letters must be typed in the correct case”. I have made sure it is correct and I have now reinstalled Linux 4 times over and made sure every time what my username and password is and in what case it is but I still can’t log in.

I would try reinstalling with the option to log in automatically. Or you could try logging in as root, with the same password you created during install.

Another user had a similar issue, it turned out that he was using a different keyboard, so it was entering some wrong characters. Something to watch out for.

If you simply can't get it to work at all, try the main edition instead. It looks just about the same outside, just has a different engine under the hood.

You can also use your LMDE installation media in Live mode to fix your machine.

Had this problem and only made it work by creating a new installation media

I had a problem with passwords. I tried this: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... +#p1017420 and it helped my issue, but my issue was with the Software Manager not accepting my password through the graphical interface, not when logging in.

I think username has to be entered as lowercase, regardless of any capitals you may have typed when you created it.

Yes this is exactly what is happening to to me. I am not going through the process of reinstalling LMDE2 with all the manual partitioning hubbub again after doing it last night. There must be something not working on the GUI interface in the login.
Have you figured it out yet Juan Oliver? ~ it's damned frustrating!

I have the same issue, re-installed 5 times now and very careful to use a simple password using only letters and numbers to eliminate the keyboard as an issue.

If you are having problems logging in to the GUI, if you switch to an alternate CLI console, either through the Ctrl-Alt-F3 (or F4, F5 or F6) key combination or recovery mode from GRUB, can you log in to the command line? The terminal will at least show you the full error messages and show if it is an actual problem with your username/password combination or if it is a problem with lightdm. or mdm (your GUI login).
