Cinnamon crashing, upgrades not completing

Hello,
I installed LMDE2 from ISO. Then I ran

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

There were many upgrades. I rebooted, then ran the update/upgrade sequence again.

Now I get a message "Cinnamon crashed, would you like to restart"? and it falls back to a rescue version. That version doesn't have a terminal so I can't figure out what's wrong.

In the update messages that scrolled by, there was one that said (from memory, sorry) /cinnamon/menu.svg already in that package, trying to save over it, failed.

Is there some way I can re-start the procdess of updating the packages?

go in a console (ctrl + alt + f1) loggin, and then apt update && apt dist-upgrade

apt upgrade should not be used.

Congrats! And remember, always use dist-upgrade. Upgrade alone can't install new packages and therefore left your system half upgraded.
